So what is the actual situation with him being out of contract at the end of next season that we're panicking about? He has to be traded there as he's not a free agent, yes? So unless Freo tank and finish last to be able to take him in the psd then our position is really no weaker than this year. They still have to pay for him or we'll re-sign him because he won't leave us to play at the Gabba.

There goes 2017. He's proven he can't play with the speculation, his form was shit in the last 3rd of the year when all this shit started heating up. Next year will be twice as bad.

Can't be a daddy issue, if it was, he should want out asap. Reckon he still doesn't rate the MFC.
Can still definitely be the issue. We don't know how crook his father is (assuming the rumour of illness is actually correct). It's well within the realms of possibility that his health could go either way and Jesse is keeping his options open for either eventuation.

Say what?! I must have skimmed over this development. What's "Whore for Hogan"?
It's not a big thing to get worried about. It's just a growing group of Melbourne board posters who have committed to selling their bodies or morals or innocence (and some animals in Sir Hugh's case) in pursuit of the best long term KPF outcome for the club. It's more the principle rather than Hogan in particular, but this seemed a good moment to take the pledge. I don't think there is anything for you to be alarmed about - you sign some papers and in return you get an awesome costume.

Take this with a grain of salt but Alex from work said he thinks Jesse is going and that guy won our footy tips. Both things were bad news for WGS.
That should be alarming to some extent but the guy at my work who won the footy tips talks about UFOs, his own unique take on the JFK shooting, and is taking some leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation. So I retain my right to an open mind.

Honestly think he'll go, but it'd be a massive boost for the clubs image if he stays.
This bit is half the dilemma for supporters. Regardless of any other measure, at current status he is a massively exciting prospect for the AFL on potential. And it's been a while since Melbourne had a full on superstar. I was lucky to meet Robbo this year - and he talked about MFC genuine superstars of the competition as being so few and far between compared to any other club. In fact, his real superstar list was limited to Flower and to some extent Jackovitch - allowing that he left a number of question marks by disappearing into an abyss after a very few tantalising years. So it's not a surprise that MFC supporters get funny about Hogan. Our history with even getting potential guns, let alone retaining them, is not really solid. I hope he stays not just because he is a promising player, but because it will mean a lot for the club if he does.

If the worst happened though, I'll live. We've had practice at enduring the worst ever, so this crap is nothing.

I suspect we work at the same place. Alex loves UFO facts.

This could be the case. If we do work at the same place and you are the sporadic "phantom" who has been crapping in the middle of the floor in the men's for the past 2 years, give yourself up now because that one hasn't been pinned on anybody yet.

I'm going to say this as respectfully as I can - hopefully without further escalation. There's a point when I feel the need to disengage from your style of discussion. My posts state what my thoughts are on Jesse Hogan, the person, and what his behaviour means to me. You've gone off on a tangent as far as I'm concerned as far as responding to my posts. None of your contractual talk has exposed any falsity in what I've posted - simply because I'm talking qualitatively on how I feel about helping Hogan to his destination. I haven't spoken about contractual particulars. Of course we have to honour the terms of his current contract - that's the extent to which I'll talk about his contract. My posts on Jesse Hogan are like everybody else's - personal thoughts made in an information vacuum. There's no point going toe to toe with you on things when there's no real objective in mind, as far as I'm concerned.

I'd like to leave it at that, if that's ok with you.
Mate. The only reason it went there was because you quoted a post of mine discussion restraint of trade and when I responded you told me to stop talking about restraint of trade

I'm not even sure what tangent you're on now. I was discussing something with another poster, you quoted me, then when I responded on the same topic, you called me obsessed and told me you don't even know why I'm talking about it with you. Don't rewrite history

But I agree. If that's how you're going to respond, might be best to leave it

So as far as I can tell the facts are as follows:-

  • Hogan has said zero
  • He's got another year left of contract
  • WA teams are jizzing in their shorts at the thought of getting him
  • He's from WA
  • His dad is older and was recently crook - nobody knows if it is ongoing.
  • He has bought property in WA

So i'm going to fill in the gaps and give my opinion based on all the reports I've heard.

He's a kid who is close with his family. His dad is older, and him getting sick recently has made Jesse realize that his dad won't be around forever, and maybe it might be good to make time to spend with him in case that opportunity disappears. I suspect his dad would have said "Do what is best for you, I'm really proud of you regardless" like all dads would, so this 21 year old - remembering that when I was 21 I had the emotional depth of a teaspoon - feels a little conflicted. All his mates and relationships are in Melbourne, and all his family is in Perth. Not to mention, every supporter, media pundit and AFL list manager is buzzing around trying to get him to go one way or the other.

He's bought an investment property where he wants to retire, because who the hell wants to manage property in another state. This year I'd say he's been pretty filthy with his own performance. I think he'd planned on putting in a much bigger year personally, because that would make the decision a lot easier.... because 1) Melbourne would stick such a huge contract in front of him and 2) WA teams wouldn't have the currency to get a trade done for such a superstar. But as its gone, he must feel like he hasn't showcased himself well this year, and that frustration I feel has shone through.

So if I were him, I would look at my current contract length, and assuming I'm not in a rush to get home, I would say lets give it another year. I back myself in to play my role and be a great player, my offer increases, and if I want to go home they can sell the farm for me as well. Not making a decision now doesn't change the options, unless he has another stinker. If he does, I doubt it'll change his dollar value much from now, it'll just mean less trade value to Melbourne.

TL:DR - There is no reason to make a decision now, he will stay 1 more year and re-assess mid next year.

Definitely could be. Especially if rumours that his dad has told him to do what's best for himself are correct. Would be very conflicting.

I dont think he actually bought a property in WA, I think that leaked photo was his brothers place. Just caused a shitstorm when he stood in front of a sold sign :p

From what his manager said yesterday, was something along the lines of "His family and friends are all in perth, but he enjoys living in melbourne, and isn't opposed to staying here"

Yeah i left the manager's comments out.... simply because managers are complete bozos who say anything that will help their client. Same as i left of MFC's statements of he'll stay.

I don't think we've said anything, have we? They were commending us on radio this morning for staying quiet and not feeding the flames

I think we've largely inferred that we're confident he'll stay, but I dont think we've ever come out and declared it, which i think is a good way to go about it.

Seems to be the way we go about all things of this nature actually, we give very little away, and remain tight lipped about anything of note.

Even Hibberd which is all done according to everyone is 'we are very interested, but we need to get a deal done.' Don't mind at all.

Yeah that's part of what I'd based it on. By all reports its a foregone conclusion, but officially we've been fairly non committal. Good way to go about it, keeps the speculation to a minimum.

There is obviously plenty around about Jesse, but none of it is coming from us

I've purposely stayed out of this thread until now (but have been enjoying reading it immensely; it's like a serialised Dickens novel) but here's my two cents.

There's no need to force Jesse's hand. Ultimatums aren't the way to deal with this situation. He's contracted next year. Who knows? We might be in a prelim next year (haha. But GWS have gone from 11th to a prelim in one year...)

Dare I say we're far enough out of the muck now that we can deal with things (largely) on a season by season basis. It's not 2013 anymore, we don't need to always be looking four years in advance when we might be 'good'.

Fyfe and weller or kennedy and barrass or gtfo. If for no other reason than i'll do myself in living in Perth with these W@nkers if we get shafted... Jesse please think of the children.

For what it's worth, I think big Jesse is staying. He wants to up his value, and we'll literally pay him anything next year. Especially if it looks like we'll be getting dust/wcedockersplayers in return. A big year next year and his value to us will be immense. I think he'd be silly to sign now. He holds all the cards and its not like the MFC will be giving the best young forward in the comp an ultimatum. The speculation just adds more $$$ to the offer.
No way do I want Kennnedy he's 29, we need a KPF that's in the right age bracketfor a tilt in 3-4 years time.
