Player Watch #1: Nick Vlastuin

Agree with you.
He is not being limited by his position in the side, but by his average tank and speed.
If he can improve this, then he'll be better in the midfield or backline. Vlaustin has great skills, tough and courageous, but just needs improvement in stamina.

Never a truer word spoken. He simply doesn't have the tank or pace to play full-time midfield.
I think if peoploe check the stats, Vlastuin got more of the ball playing half back in the game before and game after his one in the midfield.

Getting touches in the midfield though can be a product of a few things.

1. fitness
2. role - defensive/offensive - ryan crowley for example can play a full game in the midfield and not get a lot of touches
3. knowledge - players spend a whole preseason and then would have multiple sessions on and off the field with their line learning where to stand, where to run etc

Vlas might not have the fitness but just because he played one game in the midfield for less touches doesn't mean he wont be able to find the footy there in the future. I imagine he if had the tank and we had a good replacement for him at half back then he'd do a preseason as a mid.

All that aside - sometimes a player like Vlastuin is just better as a half back. Corey Enright springs to mind as a guy who could play midfield but was too valuable on the HB line.

Can someone tell me why its a problem having him play down back?
Especially now that we have some depth in the middle?
I wouldnt mind if Floss rotated through the midfield but he is a pretty good backman.

Cotchin,Martin,Miles,Caddy,Prestia thats 5 we really dont have a great deal of depth in the midfield. We are still 2-3 short for genuine inside mids

This comes up a bit, but Vlaus isn't Boris.

Let's just get him as fit as he can, get him clued in with our stoppages strategy and rest will either happen or it won't.

I rate Vlaus, but it's up to him. We look better when he has the ball in midfield, but he needs to apply himself to run through there.

I keep hearing he doesn't have a tank. He played in a the guts once this year from memory and seemed to play pretty well. And I havent seen him gassed once. If hodge can play in the midfield every now and then with his running power tigger can no doubt. Hardwick has just lost his confidence as a coach. And it's not even that bold of a move to throw him in there. Hopefully Blake can get a hold of him and throw him in there more often and we can see what he can do

I think five is plenty rotation wise. It would be nice to have one or two more, but three is a bit over the top.
I think they want Corey Ellis playing in their this year, but he is still a bit off the pace.

I'M pretty certain Vlastuin was spent at three quarter time v the Hawks after his midfield stint.

Don't remember it. just remember he played well

You can always improve your fitness.

It's hard to put bravery into players.

Also you can say he kept us in the game for 3 quarters. We may not have been in the game at all.

I really need to see this guy in the middle before i make a judgement. I've not been a massive fan, don't think he is a spud or anything like that but i dont see the future captain calls( doesn't seem overly vocal out there). He puts great pressure in defence, has composure and is a very good intercept for his size but he gets beaten 1 on 1 in marking so often, not good for a back man, results in an instant goal. He is a solid guy but seems to get out muscled/ positioned too often in the air but great around his feet. The middle sounds better for him like most tiges fans agree but he isn't overly quick is he. Anyway i would like to see what he could in the guts and if hes not up to it, trade him.

He was moved to the BL at 3q x when the game was still in dispute. I don't know the reason for him being moved, but Hawthorn demolished us in the last quarter while our pop gun midfield was being demolished. His hard body was massive in the midfield against the bigger bodied Hawks for the first 3Q. Now if he was gassed in the last the BL was not the preferable place to hide him as the Hawks forward line is so mobile. He would have been better on a Hawk midfielder like a Lewis just to nullify or tag him.

What do we think - the midfield experiment is over?

To be he just looks better overhead and is good defensively. I think I'd play him back in defense. Seems to rushed in the midfield and hasn't yet had an impact forward. He looks lean and fit, but it's fair to say his JLT series was pretty underwhelming.

hasn't got the tank to play in the guts we get slaughtered when he is in there
Hasn't played midfield for years, need to give him some time to get back in the groove of things. Not concerned in the slightest
