Kudos to NomadPie for a fine opening thread, although it's hard to choose 'the one'. Still, I choose Bucks. I saw us play a lot of ordinary/shitful footy in the 1990s, but it was Buckley more than anyone else who kept my appreciation of the game alive during those uninspiring years. I sometimes went to Geelong games just to watch Ablett senior, went to a few games at Moorbabbin just to watch Plugger, and sometimes the only thing which motivated me to watch the Pies get beaten was the prospect of watching the brutish majesty of N. Buckley.

Horses aren't very good at mathematics are they o_O

I should say neigh

But you made a good point.

Peter Moore, his song says it all and would be awesome having him line up with Our other future Moore superstar. I’d stop him from leaving too.

Travis Cloke (don't turn him into a FF)

Or Leon Davis ( use him as a defender his whole career)

An honourable mention to Rowdy, had it all.
Total agreement on Rowdy, immense courage and bled black and white - quite literally at times.

Seeing him come trotting out in the '90 GF after being patched up from a cheap shot and immediately getting in Daniher's face was one of the highlights of my footy watching life.

Any of those, or Len Thompson. Six foot seven, agile, quick, great skills. He didn't just break the mould for ruckmen, he made a mockery of it.
I once saw him drop kick a goal from just forward of the wing at Windy Hill after the three quarter time siren.
In today's equivalents, it would be like Mason Cox taking all his marks; moving like, say, Will Hoskin-Elliot; and kicking like Lynden Dunn.
Big Len was the forerunner of today's ruckmen, a great pity he played in a time of Collingwood almosts.

I think of Rowdy every time I see a player giving away a free kick just for diving at the ball like a maniac. That sort of courage and desperation, it seems, belong to another time.

Yes it's being outlawed slowly and surely as the game is sanitized for prime time consumption.

Mustn't offend the bleeding hearts . . .

And we had a long tradition of winning the goal kicking.

Peter McKenna kicked at least one goal for 121 consecutive matches, a league record!

Our Uber elite greats:

  • Dick Lee won goal kicking 10! Times
  • Gordon Coventry
  • Ron Todd
  • Peter McKenna

Would have loved to have seen bucks in his prime.
Best we've ever seen in the B&W - it was a pleasure.

Someone more recent, and a bit obscure is Sean Rusling. He had elite attributes, but his shoulders just couldn't stand-up to the rigours. With a sound body would've loved to have seen what he could achieve.

Sean R is one that got away due to injury/unsuitable body.

There must be quite a few of those types.
Mark Orval might have been another one though we will never really know.

This is my first thread, I've only recently become a regular on here so apologies if a similar thread is hidden away in past pages.

If you could choose 1 Collingwood player from the past to start their career again and be on our list this season who do you choose. Doesn't necessarily have to be to improve our team, could be just a player you loved to watch for some reason.

Mine is Scott Burns, an all time favourite player of mine. Was hard as a cats head, a great ball user and a very good leader as well... Very underated in my opinion... I wore 17 on my back in my playing days because of him.

Love that guy.

But I’d choose Leon Davis for our backline. He’d be scintillating in modern football.

Gonna be greedy and go for 3
1) Bruce Abernathy - classy ball user.
2) Graham Wright impacted from the start - underated
3) Doug Barwick - stylish finisher and bull.

Brian Taylor

I don't know that he'd fancy being a 'roaming Brian' in today's footy, but he'd certainly bring a much needed sense of theatre back into the game.

The number 19 Graham Wright. Absolutely loved watching him play as a kid. He's my all time favourite Collingwood player.

Bit left field, but I'd like Daisy.

Prime Dale Thomas was not only the best player in our team with prime Swan and Pendles, but the best player in the comp. Absolute gun. Everyone remembers the ball goal to get into the GF, not as many remember Daisy's tackle:

Shame his career was riddled with injury. Always loved how he went about his craft. Just a pure footballer.
