JUDGING the AFL's best player is a vastly different exercise to uncovering its most valuable.
There are many different measures, thanks to Champion Data, to rate footballers' worth but wins and losses are arguably the greatest gauge of all, even in a team sport.
And on that measure, there is no more valuable midfielder to their team than North Melbourne's contested ball king Ben Cunnington.
Cunnington's missed seven matches since the start of the 2015 season, including three in the past month – and the Kangaroos lost them all.

The Roos also suffered defeat in Cunnington's one appearance in recent weeks, when his ailing back was still bothering him and saw him exit the match for good in the third quarter.
They started the season 2-0, with him fit and firing.


Cunnington will be out again on Saturday night, when North Melbourne faces reigning premier Richmond at Gold Coast's Metricon Stadium.
No other AFL onballer's absence has such a detrimental effect on his side's fortunes in the past five years but he isn't the sole top-line midfielder whose club struggles without him.

The Western Bulldogs won just once in five games since 2015 without their new skipper Marcus Bontempelli (win rate drops by 36 per cent).
Adelaide captain Rory Sloane (minus-12 per cent), Essendon's Zach Merrett (minus-14 per cent), Giant Josh Kelly (minus-12 per cent), Melbourne's Clayton Oliver (minus-15 per cent) and Tiger Dustin Martin (minus-16 per cent) are also missed greatly.

Sloane will be sidelined for up to the next six weeks with a new hand injury as his Crows hunt their first win this season.
On the flipside, Sydney's win rate somehow spikes by 13 per cent when gun onballer Josh Kennedy isn't playing, so maybe there is hope while he recovers from a knee setback.

However, this period overlaps with the end of the Swans' strong era, when they had greater depth and more experience than they do now.
Every team's best midfielder was picked, with exceptions where they haven't missed a game (or only a few) in the past five years, such as Brisbane's Lachie Neale and Port Adelaide's Travis Boak.

Legends are old useful as their most recent game lol, one is a legend because of what he can do not for who he is.

I shouldn't engage with you on your tirade of bullshit but Ben's last two games (excluding the dogs, where he shouldn't have been named) were decent and, coincidentally, we won both of them. Before then we're going back to last year where he was one of the best inside mids in the competition. I know that you can't see this so you'll just have to agree to disagree with everyone on here who knows anything about football.
 
I bet Cunners is not enjoying the "new" interpretation of holding the ball, he used to be the most regular offender to be pinged anyway before ClarkoGate and the whistleblowers over reaction, nevertheless, get back soon, sorely missed.

He is literally the difference between contention for a finals spot and not making it.

Without Cunners, Higgins gets a lot of attention and the balance is off.

Very much like when Wells and Harvey were both playing at the same time. You can tag one, but the other is gonna have a blinder.

My mate reckons it is Sciatica. He had lost muscle strength in his quads. 'The first muscles to turn to jelly were his quad muscles'.

Brady mentioned that they are trying to build Ben's quad muscles back up as he has lost strength in his legs.


Usually self-diagnosable

Pain originates in the spine and radiates down the back of the leg. Sciatica typically affects only one side of the body.

People may experience:

Pain areas: in the back, buttocks, hip, or lower extremities

Pain types: can be mild, severe, radiating, or sharp

Pain circumstances: can occur due to injury or while sitting

Muscular: difficulty walking or muscle weakness

Sensory: leg numbness or pins and needles

Also common: burning sensation, foot numbness, or weakness

That impostor couldn't possibly be one, and it speaks volumes about the standards here in recent years.
