Player Watch #10: Colby McKercher - re-signed until the end of 2028

Interesting to see what we do with Colby (position-wise) in 26.
Our recently promoted midfield coach, Micky Barlow, made a good point on the Footy & Friends podcast this week. In reference to Fremantle’s Jordan Clark getting more midfield time next season, Mick suggested “When you’ve got an All Australian halfback I reckon you leave them there.”

I tend to agree. The obsession with turning every flanker into a midfielder is a bit annoying at times. If Kerch is killing it off half back & it’s helping us win games, I’d rather keep him there than take midfield minutes away from LDU, Wardlaw & Sheezel.
If one of those guys are having a spell on the pine, chuck in Curtis, O’Sullivan or Bull for five minutes.
Depends, quick fire way to pack his bags for Tasmania if he desires to play midfield.

I would be exploring his midfield talent and acquiring new half backs. Half backs are easy to find, cost little in draft capital.

We really should be gathering one with our first pick this draft. If Goater comes on that would free up Colby to torch the midfield and link up from the half backs to inside 50.

Agree. This should be the priority unless we believe that Pickett is incredible. My only concern is I don't particularly rate any of GWS's small forwards, so if they rate him, there's a fair chance he's no good.

It's a moot point anyway, GC were so awful they handed us the win. Would've taken 2009 Melbourne level blatantly obvious shaningans to try and lose that game.
We could've sent a few in for early ops but AFL might've screwed us on compo.

Even though they willingly handed WC Band 1 while they held pick 1.

A strong West Coast is of more interest to them than a strong us.

there should be an investigation into gc that game

they were leading then turned into the worst football side in history

Investigation would probably go like this:

AFL: We're investigating you for playing only half a game and looking like you were tanking
Gold Coast: Broadly gestures to their entire history of their games from 2011-2023
AFL: Fair enough. Nothing unusual here.

They probably waited for the Kangas odds to drift out at Half time (we were down by 6 points). Then Davo and Macca from the Gold Coast strip laid simultaneous bets on 14 different agencies to back the Kangas home. This paid for the Suns EOY trip (incl drinks 😎).

There are 13 players from our side that day that are no longer on our list.

Thomas, Ford, Lazz, WP, Turner, Tucker, Taylor, McKay, Goldie, Bergman, Howe, Perez and Dawson.

Did he play sanfl? Im not sure he got much of the cherry in the sanfl.. i’d be steering well clear of him

There isn't anything to investigate as it had no bearing on their ladder position. They just didn't give a **** in a meaningless game.

Horrible list back then.

They were coached by the current Melbourne coach. Just saying...

With ya, anyone still negative about us has not looked at our list. I'm only needing to read those who haven't played at all or been injured. Holy ****, it's been a while since we had so much talent in reserve.

Hold.

yep, and so the wrong thread for what is worthy of genuine discussion. I'll fix that.

Rinse repeat observation from previous pre-seasons. I will believe I when I see it. There are still a lot of question marks on players currently on our list.

What's our average age, Francis? You'd expect so.

Francis, I'm bored, let's do this. I don't know what you're expecting in an 18-Team Salary-Capped exhibition league with the 3rd lowest sized supporter group. Honestly though it's probably your expectations that need readjustment.

That we have the following U27s is a real impressive effort.

Shezus
Xerri
LDU
McKercher
Wardlaw
Larkey
FOS
Curtis
Archer
Comben
Hardeman
Duursma
Powell
George
Goater
Goad
Dawson
Whitlock
11
26

Here's one for you, who and in what year retires first? Xerri, Larkey or LDU in 2031? 2034?

This is actually as good as it gets with Tasmanian stealing all the talent from those trying to catch us (in terms of future talent). Hawforn did exactly this for GWS/GC in 2012-2016. Reach for the rosary beads if you must, but we're going ok.

I didn't see all the uproar with Eagles having the first two picks in this draft either, like we had to deal with in the lead up to that draft.
Good point. I remember trying to calm myself down after every negative hit piece article back then many of which glossed over that we were utter trash and would end up with a natural high pick.

Bastards.

It was bizarre behaviour, and happen to coincide with us asking for compo, so naturally we were getting picks 1&2 as compo..

And those smooth brains in the radio knew damn well it wasn't the case but kept it rolling because it emoted anger with the audience.

Well thats it exactly I guess. Generate as much click bait and audience engagement as possible at the minimal risk of pissing off a small club with no real voice or weight.

Maybe the appalling errors are still a bit too prevalent, but I'd happily nominate his name for the leadership bracket too.

X, Larkey, Sheez, himself, Parker the most logical group. Maybe Chom too although I'm not convinced Chom is as reliable a footballer as I thought he was

You said at the start of the season you sensed impending second year blues. I poo-pooed the idea. Then he had second year blues. Then I acknowledged you were onto something. Then he turned into our best player for the second half of the year.

He made me look a muppet twice, after I made a predominantly correct prediction. And so goes the story of this bloody site
Predict us to be terrible next year please.
