Good luck to him! Boy is he important to us currently with Guelfi and Davey down. The only other legit small forwards we have are Menzie and a first year player in Kako.

I'll back the call. Impact player, can play multiple positions and struggled in the Geelong match as well as towards the end of last year. Needed a kick up the ass.

I find it funny that last year nearly everyone was saying why is he in the side towards the end. Now after one game he plays well after coming on and the coach has ****ed it up ?

I think it was more that the coach ****ed up the sub and went in far too tall. Gresham coming on balanced us out alittle.

I’m not convinced too tall was the issue myself. When they broke the game early it was more not playing 6 forwards and not allowing them to burn it out of the back half. The game was lost within 15 minutes of rebounding footy. Yes their small forwards were good but the rebound set it up in my view.
Was also some defensive lapses in the front half that hurt .
70% of the game we matched them.

To be fair, we said Gresham was a poor sub choice before the game. You cannot go in with one small forward in the modern game, especially against Hawthorn who have good ball movers from defence. It was a poor decision by Scott and it showed in the second half.

Most of the first quarter we still had mobile players there. Not like we have a bunch of talls. The mistake was not the sub. The mistake was going with a 5 man forward line and running the extra up to the contest which they changed at 1/4 time. It was a tactical error by the coaching group. Gresham or Hobbs my view is it would not have mattered. The damage was done in that 15 minute period of the first quarter when we allowed the the extra player in the back half rather than matching up 6 on 6. That's my take.

Is that chicken or egg?

Did we elect to send a number up to the stoppage because of the extra midfielder we picked in the 22 or did we pick the extra midfielder in the 22 because that’s how we want the game to look?

I’m not sure I like the extra around the ball because I don’t think we have the aerobic power to push away from the stoppage and create overlap, I don’t think it works otherwise.

One of our glaring issues last year was the lack of quality small forwards we had. I would have loved Tippa at his peak running around causing havoc with the amount of inside 50 we were generating, Gresham was our best in that area. Menzie was below par. We have started to address that problem by recruiting Kako. So we make Gresham sub. Hawks had 3 quality smalls causing us problems. Very slippery conditions in that humidity. Coaching error for me.

How good was peak Walla. He is exactly what we need right now.

The most frustrating thing is there were a number of us saying this before the game too when word got out he was going to be sub.
All the retorts re him being the best player to be sub are just deflections that aren't looking at the bigger picture, who cares who has the most impact in the last 30 or 40 min if the game is lost in the preceding two and a half quarters because we've gone too tall in the forward line meaning we a) can't capitalise on our forward 50 entries and B) can't stop their transition from defence to attack.

This was as predictable a selection issue as when he selected cox/jones as our primary wings in the rain against the dees last year and windsor/Langdon ran rings around them.

Watched a lot of Gresh at the Saints due to my wife being a St Kilda fan, but this feels like the best version of him. Constant pressure, contact, and whilst he may drift in and out of games, he does some damage.

Had a great start to the season.

Has been involved in quite a few heavy rib tickling collisions since he has come to us - the bravest where he went when it was his turn against the massive Swan Hayden McLean last year. Scott will love that stuff. If he can keep honing his kicking to go with the neat sidesteps there is a spot for him.
