Zero possessions to half time earns a coaches vote?

Strange times we live in.

I thought Bolton led them back into the match in the second half, I would have had him as a 1 or 2 vote.

For me personally.

5 - Jordan
4 - Grundy
3 - Melican
2 - Bolton
1 - Warner

His first half nowhere near it yes, but if he had been like that in both first and second halves Fremantle win that match.

Our key defenders should just pack it up and go home and let the midfielders the coaches all love so much fend for themselves, and then see where we end up. It's a joke. Our back 6/7 were the only ones that saved the midfielders' shithouse defending of territory from costing us the game.

Shows what a goose that Sean Teuma is
Shai Bolton must have pics of his coach

I guess you could say (I don’t agree) it was Bolton and Reid getting them back into it in the second half. Dead set I underestimated Reid knew he was good but not this good

Warner, Ryan and McInerney had no business being in the votes above Lloyd or any of our key defenders.

Warner was important getting us what was the match winning lead. Ryan is a laugh though

My guess is that coaches often allocate 1s and 2s to players who either do a particular job, focus on an instruction they've been given, or maybe have a couple of good moments as opposed to overall impact on the game.

McInerney for example was 'just' decent to good but had a couple of moments where he really put his head over it. Perhaps that was something he was asked to focus on so 2 votes was an acknowledgement of that from Cox.

Purely guessing though. I didn't see much in Bolton's game that would warrant recognition.

The team laid 81 tackles, including 20+ in the front half so it wasn't just the defenders doing the work. Yes playing up back in AFL is to disappear off the radar for best player votes.

Even Papley tackled a bloke furiously to the ground fairly , Errol had 8 , as did Will and Heens 7 , it was great pressure

Sure, but Freo were also cruising from end to end and entering their forward 50 under no pressure at all all day because midfielders, including a few given coaches votes, had no desire to man up at all. In a number of those instances - and there were enough of them that it could've been a completely different result - it was the defenders' saving the midfielders' backsides by intercepting.

What a slap in the face for not one of them to get no recognition in the votes.

One thing I learned from this game is that for all the hype about the inclusions of Gulden and Papley, the more important inclusion in recent weeks has been Joel Amartey. He really does give us so much structure ahead of the ball. He draws defenders so we can have other targets in the clear and find them, and even when we bomb it (which is inevitable and all teams do it) he gives us enough of a contest to stop the opposition from just marking it.

And it's not necessarily just him. When McLean is in this sort of form, he provides the same sort of thing, and Reid did as well in the back end of 2022. That is perhaps the most frustrating thing. We don't even need a superstar forward, just one that can decent-to-good consistently (unlike McLean) and be on the park every week (unlike Amartey and Reid.)

We will miss Amartey against the Saints and I fear we'll be back to needing some freakish contributions from the midfielders to put up a winning score.

Who said he was out ?

I dunno, is it not a given? He looked to be in quite a lot of discomfort and given his history with injuries I can't see us risking him against the Saints?
If i kicked you in the ##### i bet you'd be in discomfort . Happened to me at cricket once ,lucky i had a box on and i was in a fair bit of pain lol

Have to disagree, you can see how much better the midfield has looked because there are runners on the outside. Has also allowed the entries into the forward line to be less rushed and better. Can see that McLean is actually getting decent service and looking better and Amartey is getting almost too many shots.

Also think people give Mills a little too much stick for his dangerous ball use at times but you can see even on the TV how he commands the back 6 and just intercepts so many dumb kicks.

Yes Amartey is a big in but Gulden and Mills completely redefine how we play and our efficiency

Warner votes 😂 surprising

Was outstanding in the first half to 3/4 time mediocre after that but him, Errol and Grundy were a big reason we had the match winning lead
