I didn't mind Finey - whilst I've said here before that I don't rate talkback radio and think it's lazy and pointless in an era of social media, I have to admit that Final Siren was a bit of a guilty pleasure, especially if a Collingwood or a Richmond lose in a heartbreaker on Friday night. Fine was pretty good at needling fans in that scenario.

But with that said, this can't come as a shock to anyone. The hiring of Whateley has clearly signalled an intent by SEN to become more professional in it's presentation and his style of provocation and occasional abuse of callers is nowhere near a professional presentation. I agree that Connelly is probably favourite - but who knows? Despite a change of ownership, footy media in Melbourne is still one big boys club, so whether RoCo gets the job will depend largely on his relationship with Hutchison. Given their Footyology history, it might also depend on whether RoCo is prepared to accept his mates old job.

Doesn't surprise me too much that Finey was moved on. Has "outlier" views about the AFL, has slagged-off friends and colleagues of Hutchinson on air, plus his aggressive style on air wouldn't have fit too well with a vanilla, sponsor-driven Crocmedia.

I've listened to RoCo a few times, will be surprised if he gets the gig. Outside of AFL, I don't think he has expansive knowledge of sports - just opinions - and he sounds a bit "green" (amateurish) on air. Possibly not slick/professional enough for Crocmedia.

I wonder who will do the 11PM Friday night shift during the footy season. Doubt there would be anyone better than Finey at handling all the different sorts of callers you get after Friday night footy
I’m guessing we will get that Saturday Night Lights? Show with Terry Wallace and Darren Parkin/Tristan Foenander that Crocmedia did.

RoCo IMHO has the ability to grow into the role. He is a bit green but with some training will be able to introduce and close segments smoothly soon

The Aus Open and the Melbourne Cup are the two biggest sporting events in Australia every year.

They have the most global significance and prestige.

The Cup is still in the biggest 10 horse races globally and the Aus Open is a major title for tennis, one of the biggest sports in the world traditionally.

The boxing day test I'd argue is ahead of the F1 Grand Prix, it's the highest attended test match globally every year and the MCG as a venue has 150 years of history behind it.

I agree the Grand Prix is underrated, but it's trumped by a few others.

The AFL and NRL grand finals are arguably the two biggest events every year, but I mark them down due to global appeal.

Got to agree with a few posts ago, American Sports being unpopular??!? maybe if you are over 40.

I see NBA/NFL/EPL challenging crickets market share within the next 30 years when this generation grows up.

BBL was a much needed injection for CA though, it's helped curb that a lot though
Great post mate. Measured and articulate.

I think footy talk is great, but when topics like "who's the best player to wear no 1 guernsey" starts you know we're in trouble

In light of the relative popularity of sports in Oz, certainly golf has dropped right away from its peak period of the Norman era of the 1980s/1990s.

Hopefully under this new regime and with Allen gone the excessive amount of coverage golf has had on SEN is cut back. Surely in KB's new show there won't be a segment every week devoted to golf technique.

Fine gone, good.

Maher next, please.

I am really surprised with RoCo in some ways. Learning the job, and good music at times.
However, for someone who has been a major newspaper sports journalist for so long, he seems to know so little about sports other than footy.

bedford your thoughts on finey getting sacked?
Not happy, but he's no everyone's cup of tea. He filled a role and his research is outstanding. He never had a contract , the only one. He's been there from the start and will survive in what ever he chooses.

I'm with you.
Great great shame.

Fine always did all the research.
Knew many sports.
Good argue a point based on facts and well structured arguments.
Yes, he had his moments, sometimes went off.... but far far less than he used to.

Very odd move in my opinion.
He was a rock for SEN.

And had many terrific segments night after night after night.
