Word at Claremont is that he’s almost certainly “coming home”.

The story doing the rounds is that he likes Sydney & the club, but got frustrated at being unable to get a start & West Coast took advantage, particularly with the Swans focussed on other re-signings.

The Sheldrick family is very deeply ingrained in Perth footy circles - and it’s true they’re close to Don Pyke.

If the story is accurate (and fingers crossed it’s not) - yet another first rounder out the door must surely cause some serious internal reflection. It’s becoming a disaster.

He didn't knock the door down really

Don’t agree at all.

Hes a professional AFL player & if someone is dangling $$$, a move home and job security, its not sooky to consider it.
Yep, they have a very limited time to earn the big bucks so they have to do what is best for them long term. More opportunity + money + going home = it being very hard to say no
.
Personally I hope he stays, but no knock on him if he chooses to go home.

As long as he doesn't tell us in an after match interview that we have nothing to worry about 😡

There are 10 games left. Any talk of him leaving out of frustration is premature.

He's 21 years old. If he keeps playing well and cements a spot then Cox will have a conversation with him about his role next year.
There is a highly likelihood he plays the remaining 10 games and ends up playing 14 non sub games for the year and averaging like 20 odd touches 10 contested possessions 5 clearances 5 tackles a game as a 21 year old. His little month block we have seen unvested if continued would put him well in the Swans top 20 players imo.

Like the comments people have been flying around could be 2-3 weeks old which I can tell you in most sports a day or two is old news let alone 2-3 weeks. We will see what happens but Sydney's best shot at keeping him is not putting him in the vest

Bumps up his value

Hopefully those types of conversations are ongoing with all players on a regular basis. Builds confidence and a sense of belonging and confirms their place in the scheme of things and the type of improvements they need to make.

Players I grow a fondness of and become favourites of mine always leave. My favourite player was Tom Mitchell, then Nic Newman, then Jordan Dawson. Now Gus is becoming a favourite of mine, so he's definitely gone. After Dawson left I told myself not to have favourites anymore. I try not to.

Kinda true - but injured for the best part of 2 years.

He’s effectively a second year player.

Yeah great but either way nothing has screamed superstar, even this year he hasn't made it a must he be picked initially nor really a must he stay in as others return- though getting closer.

I like him, but I also don't think his signature is the end of the world to get.

Still prefer we get it of course , we have come this far .

If he can go and get a better job I won't begrudge him at all, but I would hope he sticks it out to show he was worth the pick we used.

If Sydney just didn't try at all to keep him then that's different, I mean go back a few pages half the board decided he sucked , I remember saying be patient , same as I said when he was a superstar all summer. Guess he is back to superstar .

We can either keep that ride or he goes to west coast and ride the , wow we let him go versus thank god he went roller coaster.

Gerard Healy has turned into an oracle but he did say in commentary that if Sheldrick is to have a decent AFL career, then his kicking needs to improve dramatically. He then said Sheldrick should ring Tom Mitchell for advice. Agree with his first comment, a little perplexed by the second one.

Yeah heard that, guess he meant Mitchell learnt to know his limitations ?

I mean to be fair Mitchell's career disposal efficiency is higher than

JPK
Luke Parker
Nick Daicos
Patty Cripps etc

to name a few and not behind Pendles.

I think he was decent at not trying to do too much at his best.

I just find it odd that we’ve signed a few players that have shown less through to 2027, but seemingly haven’t opened talks with Gus.

Sometimes our list management leaves me a bit confused.

“Hello, Tom Mitchell here”

“G’day Tom, it’s Gus Sheldrick here. Gerard Healy said you might be able to offer some advice”

“Sure mate, that’s easy, take the money”.

If we haven't opened talks yep I agree that's odd . Unless he said no way I stay or something? but yeah we have to try for sure

I feel pretty much the exact same. He is down the depth chart for our inside mids and his lack of positional flexibility will always hurt him. However, I really want to keep him because we need quality depth players like him. In fact we need at least two more like him just to make our VFL competitive and help develop our entire squad.

I'm assuming that he parked talks until he could prove his value. Worst case scenario he would have expected to leave in pursuit of games.
He was injured all of last year so the deal being offered would have been mediocre.

Now that he's getting a run of games and doing well, his asking price would be climbing, and that's fair play his agent to make the most of it.
Hopefully we can sort it out during the bye. I don't think anybody would be offering 4 years. A 2/3 year contract would likely see him stay I think.

Errol aside, our midfield is currently at full strength.

On that basis, I’d say Gus isn’t depth anymore - he’s being selected in the best XXII.

I suppose I’d pose the question: who are our emerging mids?
Cleary, maybe?
But I can’t see anyone else on the list.

Losing a young player that other clubs have identified as carrying potential always hurts - especially when our <22 year old ranks kinda suck.

Right - I need to get off this thread now for a bit !
