McRobie - every time I see your avatar of the great Derek Kickett, it brings a smile to my face. Hates Essendon possibly more than anyone else on the planet, which is a fine thing.
For my he’s symbolic of when I was a boy first watching Swans, he was one the first I watched and made me think, this games pretty good and so are the Swannies.

I thought Gus was ok last night. As usual had no problem getting his hands on it (23 disposals from just 56% game time!), also applied pressure well - but his ball use was awful - his disposal efficiency was 39.1%!! I was nervous each time he kicked and mildly surprised when he kicked his goal (despite him having kicked some nice goals in the past). Not only was his disposal the worst in the team but he was way behind the next worst (Amartey at 57.1%). Curiously, the bulk of his possessions were uncontested - does this reflect the role he is being asked to play. In a way, it's impressive that he's still able to get the ball so much even when he's not winning it at the coalface.

I've always said that Sheldrick looks more impressive as a general play sort of player than he is as a contested clearance player, so I wasn't surprised he was able to win a fair amount of ball outside stoppages. I still feel that giving him that 30-40% of inside time per game is important though as it just gives some support to the regulars in there.

He will need to improve his ball use though as I'm not sure how long it will be sustainable to keep putting out <40% disposal efficiency games especially if you're not offering much defensively either.

I'm very surprised that it was that high. The only effective kicks that I remember him having were the goal and the one where McDonald marked the ball in the goal square even though outnumbered.

I thought he was pretty poor in the first half - but so was everybody.

In the second half, however, he did some really nice things. Alas, whipping-boy status had well & truly set in here on Bigfooty. At one point, he put a really nice kick directly onto a leading Papley's chest, but a Carlton defender did well & got a fist in to spoil. The howls on Bigfooty were immediate ... bagging Sheldrick, when in fact it was a very good kick, just well defended.

He's no Errol. Never will be. But he provided some important link-up play, adds hardness, gets the ball moving our way & most teams would love to have a bloke who can find the Sherrin the way Gus does.

You have been strong on this caesar88 - fair play to you.

However I don't agree Gus didn't offer much defensively - he was applying quite a lot of pressure. He only laid one tackle, which is disappointing, but he had 14 pressure acts (9th best in the team) despite low game time.

To my eye he seemed to struggle to keep up with a lot of Carlton players, quite a few of his tackle attempts were easily brushed off, and I don't think I saw a single repeat effort off the ball all night. This was the pattern in both practice games as well. I don't know if his fitness is an issue or if he is slower in reaction time than he is actual leg speed, but he's not much of a factor without the ball for mine (which is not to say he's awful defensively), so if ball-winning is gonna be his one-wood then he needs to be better at finding it and much, much better at using it.

The club hide him on the bench.

We dominated the 3rd and Sheldrick had the lowest game time of both sides except for Fogarty. Eventually the lowest TOG for all sides and that's with us playing silly buggers with Paps etc.

Disposal efficiency in the first 0% TOG 67%
Second 57 TOG and DE 25%

So they hide him on the bench while we win.

Then in the last fair play he lifted to 39% DE when the heats off and his game time goes back up a bit to 56% , probably most of it in the second half of the quarter.

Can find the ball but that's half the problem right now. Can't carry a midfielder who we can't play decent game time, can't stick tackles , gets the ball and gives it straight to the other team.

Not saying he can't improve but he can't play like this. Event he kicks that hit targets look awful at times. He needs to figure this out, I think he can, just not sure he will be doing it in the seniors much longer, happy to be wrong .

I seriously hope players don’t read this - because that’s really an unfair pillorying.

“Hide him on the bench”?

If he was viewed that dimly, there’s absolutely no way he’d be playing seniors.

They took him off and sat him and the side performed , and I'm suggesting he shouldn't play seniors next week.

I am also not the coach, I am sure he will get picked because he can find the ball, but he plays like that against Brisbane we are ****ed.

If he is reading posts the next day on bigfooty too he has bigger problems than his kicking .

I sometimes wonder if the odd footy player (or their families) wander in here to bask in our collective wisdom.

I suspect some do. I seem to recall Sam Wicks had a relo post occasionally?

Anyway - I’m clearly biased, but I do think your takedown is over the top.

Sam's dad.

At least he has a crack , not like a couple of others

Who are you suggesting doesn’t “have a crack”?

We just demolished our opponents & I honestly don’t know why it’d be suggested that some of our players didn’t put in.

I do and don't agree with you here.

DQ is spot-on that if he was seen as that much of a problem that he needs "hiding" on the bench, then he just wouldn't be playing. And we wouldn't have given him the opportunities we've given him the last few months.

I do think that in the eyes of the coaches, Sheldrick is midfield or bust. And when he doesn't really take his chances in the midfield and gets moved out of there in favour of the "big guns", the coaches don't seem to know what to do with him. So it becomes just bench him so others can go into the mids.

It's not really hiding him, more like limiting his rotations because of a perceived lack of versatility.

The weird thing is though... I don't think he is midfield or bust! He's played good footy at half forward before! I'd rather we just leave him there and see what he can do if he's not working in the mids.

Watched the replay a few times now (yes I have no life), I found myself all alone saying aloud angrily, "geez number 12, you suck."
