Player Watch #12 Angus Sheldrick

The five-player interchange was doing wonders for Sheldrick's continuity and allowing him to develop nicely in the seniors rather than wallow around in the reserves. It's a shame he's cocked it up with such a dumb act, but thankfully for Sheldrick, Cleary isn't taking his spot any time soon.

Do we think Cunningham keeps his spot or does Cleary get the gong instead for next week?
No Cleary ever

I like that he has some aggression in him. He just needs to be a bit smarter / make sure he doesn’t get caught.

I can see him building out more size as he matures. It would be good to have a nuggety enforcer in the team.

Get that elbow in the sternum and away you go, a fine at worst (btw I am assuming the WCE player deserved it, I didn’t see the context).

Younger brother Lachlan debuted for Claremont colts on the weekend.

Got a ton of pill & was impressive.

The WAFL profile says he’s only 16, hence not eligible for this year’s draft - but fear not folks, I’ll keep you updated in the 2027 draft & trade hypotheticals thread 😋

182cm at 16 years old?

Gussy really didn't get any of the height genes

Those are the ones you can never get off. It's so dumb from Sheldrick.

On reflection, I’ve become a bit more forgiving - I thought it was bloody stupid at first too. But - he went in to fly the flag when Heeney was getting roughed up. Went to shove Ginbey using the forearm, but got him higher than expected. It was silly and a bit clumsy, but certainly not thuggish.

It wasn’t a strike, it was a push. But the AFL quite rightly doesn’t want any high contact & this was Shelricks’s doing, so it had to be a week.

There’s “flying the flag” but time and a place you are 10 goals up! Even if we half excuse the action (I don’t but whatever), you are winning by how much and you go and do that? At best it’s silly at worst it’s dumb. Hopefully it’s a lesson he learns from

I can't believe you reached this conclusion

Used the ball quite well tonight too, liking how he's using his right foot more in open play, unlike his early days where he'd force it onto his left
Noticing his right foot kicks have been shorter more accurate passes too. Like if he is kicking under 30m he goes on the right

Have said it before and I will say it again.

He is so much better as an inside/outside hybrid than as a pure inside mid. Plays with almost two different mentalities and I much prefer the attacking, competitive one he played with tonight.

Post-game he referred to himself as the "fifth mid", which to many players would be seen as a disservice, but I think it suits Sheldrick just perfectly.

Bumping this thread, just because Gus deserves a bump tonight.

Well played young fella.
maybe his best game, although he's been building to this ... real maturity, we know he has the right attitude, great kicks set up goals ... definitely one who stood up to fill the heeney void last night
