I haven't really got anything majorly against him. I was just trying to work out who we keep.
On reflection there may be a spot for him down back in 2 years.
As I fully expect Guthrie to be playing midfield by then. And we will have most likely lost J Hunt and Enright.

Not sure we are overly endowed with defenders right now...its a concern.

I thought of Eardley as a potential inside mid but could be a small/medium forward, he's just so tough at the contest I'd like him to find a spot after next year, but you've got to demand it.

maybe he and Guthrie will be fighting it out for the same spot?

This may be a sensitive matter for you, and to a degree I accept where you're coming from. I cannot, though, agree with your conclusions. Perhaps you are more privy to what occurred than me, but as far as I am aware...

1) he hasn't been charged with any criminal offence that would see him face a court of law.

2) I am not aware he is facing any civil actions from any party

3) I have not seen, in any detail, a commentary about what actually occurred. Only supposition and idle speculation about what MAY have occurred.

The lad was censured by the club in no uncertain terms. Banned from the AFL squad for the rest of the season, and only allowed to return to the VFL after Round 18. He could have been sacked but clearly the club did not think the "incident" warranted it. Given Geelong's "genuine concern about community problems" and their, no doubt, familiarity with what actually occurred, I think we should accept the clubs decision on the matter.Certainly the club's record on disciplining players' indiscretions and their active role in the community in dealing with community issues warrants a degree of trust in the clubs' actions.

I certainly don't believe we are entitled to "an official update" !

One thing I am certain of however.....JS would know exactly where he stands with respect to his future at the club should a matter of similar type arise again.

Best post on a sensitive subject I've seen in a long while:thumbsu:

And I can understand some would have concerns. The modern phenomena of PC has all made us very sensitive to all sorts of subjects some correctly , so not so. This subject is no flimsy throwaway one but neither is drink driving which many people die from each year. Would we make a judgement call on an 05 conviction?

The hard judgement is where to draw the line of reform and exorcise. In our current era of NDHP , any indiscretion may be grounds for expulsion , gee even this week some have reservation on our new recruit because he is chock full of self confidence..ie cockness. We all feel the need for rep's of the club to be lilly white but we are dealing in a people business and people are not perfect they make mistakes

There are probably several mistakes , misjudgements one could bring up that are important just as Stringers is , the point is he was not charged with an offense , he has been held to a higher standard than most would be in the work place , he has to endure public exposure and has damaged his name. I sincerely hope its a lessened learned , there will not be any second chances at Geelong on any slipup.

Really disappointed with this upgrade to be honest. I prefer to upgrade eardley as I feel we miss a hard nut lock down small defender and I expect guthrie to move into a midfield role. I think stringer will always be an average player

We didn't need to upgrade Eardley yet - he still has another year on the rookie list. We needed to make calls on the 2nd year rookies of which Stringer is one.

I know a lot of you posters like Stringer. I have only seen him in the senior games and the odd VFL game. Yes he looks ok - but I am not sure would warrant a position in the best 25, let alone best 22 at this stage.

However to be upgraded from Rookie to the Senior list in a very tight list - GFC must see he has more to offer as he gets more game time. I hope so.

Stringer is a 3rd year Rookie.
As you said Eardley didn't need to be promoted to be kept,Stringer did.Good decision :thumbsu:

Keep an eye on him this year.....he just might surprise you. An AFL level player IMO.

Key point is that Stringer had to be upgraded or delisted because he's a third year. That's why the decision has been made on him now. Eardley can wait. I don't think it means that the club rates Stringer higher than Eardley, or that Eardley won't play some senior footy next year if his form deserves it.

FWIW, I think Stringer will be a player. He's been missing for a while due to his suspension so my memory of what he did in the AFL was fading fast, but just the other day Fox Footy replayed our game against Carlton in Rd 11 or something like that, when we held them off in the last quarter to win by 2 goals. He actually stood up really well in that last quarter - got a lot of the ball and used it well, in the full heat of a closely fought senior game. He'll be good.

Yep Reg watched that game as well on Fox and it made me realise we need a decent big ruckman. We lost stoppages and centre clearances all night. Not bagging West as he had 3 rucks to compete against just that it showed how we need a big bloke who wont get pushed around all the time and can take a good grab down the line when we kick it long.

Pity as I think he has some serious potential as shown in the VFL GF

I think he will find it very difficult to force his way into the 1sts forward line as long as he plays HFF in the 2nds. It makes him a one trick pony.
He would need to play on the ball in the 2nds to show if he has the necessary versatility and ball-winning ability.

Yes, I get that, but he needs to do a bit more next year to force his way into the 1sts the year after.
True, but he is certainly raising appropriate interest and doing the right things. Will expect him to play a few games this year as am sure we will cop some injuries.

There is a spot in the future for him if he keeps his development up.

Very disappointed to see JS elevated, in fact. I think it leaves a bad taste. Note the hushed applause at VFL presentation – I doubt all fans will be happy. We know clubs are good at solving ‘off-field indiscretions’ but I like the Cats’ rep for genuine concern about community problems. I believe that it was JS himself who came forward, so it was only ever a question of what would happen next. We would at least have liked an official update. The Cats will work it on two levels at once: 1. ultra keen to keep the good player 2. theme of care for the lost sheep = better kept an eye on here, where senior Cats have demonstrated social priorities... Not sure the two tunes can be sung in harmony, but that will be the approach. Even after all the joy, feeling let down.
We persisted with Stokes, SJ and Mackie after their indiscretions.

Honestly I think it would send off a worse vibe if we dumped him after he already served his long punishment. I imagine he must feel heaps of regret and remorse, but the club must believe that he has potential to turn his ways around if they've kept him.

He was doing more than a reasonable job in our best 22 when his off-field issues intervened.

He was OK, but nothing more than depth for me. Sherrignham and Simpkin were equally as impressive. For me, I think Burbs, Walker and Eardley have the most value long term, with the addition of Caddy to our mids and hopefully injury free years to Christensen, Duncan and Hunt, we will have our mid rotations settled.

and just coz there was no case (civil or criminal) it doesnt mean there wasnt an incident.

the punishment by the club after speaking to him would indicate that there is more to it.

dont often agree with you gaz but on this occasion i feel the same way.

Don't agree with you that Sherringham and Simpkin were as impressive. I recall the coach saying at the time Stringer's issues cropped up that he was disappointed from a football perspective as Jesse was in our best 22.

It makes for interesting banter, but in the end the people who know best have seen fit to elevate him despite some yet to be resolved issues. I'm more than comfortable with that.

There WAS an incident Forrsy...no doubt. The Club punished him for it. There appears to be no further actions in train...he better not repeat it!

Time to move on.

He's in the same boat as SJ, Mackie and Stokes.
He's done the crime and done the time.
Now he has a clean slate.
His present and future depends solely upon his football performance.

in my mind, his incident is never just wiped clean. but that's my opinion.

his present and future depends on more that just his footy performance fred. that just sends the wrong message.
