Player Watch #12: Jy Simpkin [Part II] - staying at North in 2026 + won't feature in leadership group as Larkey set to be named captain

But… there isn’t only one thing North can do now? What a weirdo.
He's just not an intelligent guy. He tries so hard to sound smart, which when you're sitting between Billy Brownless and Bernie Vince isn't all that hard to do, but at the end of the day he's just a stock standard dumbass sports journo.

I think this is a good chance and would help us extract a better return.

It would be a bit of a gathering of Clarko's vanquished foes. Jy, who clearly can't work with him. Mitchell, who he also dumped as captain and later shipped off to WC. Ratten who couldn't work with him either after stepping in as coach when Clarko took his break. Funnily enough Ratten was coach when Jy got offered his current contract.
It also absolutely shuts up the nuffies who think no good side would want him in their midfield. Two top four quality teams are keen, but there's a lot of elite midfield options available at the moment.

I know Hawks think he'll add balance they need, with Duke and Nash doing the grunt work, Day for the class, Jy for the fitness and all round ability, but Merrett is the same player as Jy just more polished.

I feel like Jy is on a table at World Series Poker and he has been dealt 3 Jacks. With a rush of blood he has pushed all his chips in. This included a flick of his hair complete with a Zoolander Magnum stare directly back at Clarko

Unfortunately Clarko has 3 Aces in his hand and is having a quiet chuckle internally. Start enjoying that Wing young man. I’ll speak to the Maintenance crew to start removing the C from your locker.

Well, it should shut them up. On form though, it won't.

In the end though, Jy is more valuable to us than these teams. We should be finding a way to keep him and resolve the conflict between him and the coach. That Clarkson has been unable to find an important role for our captain is pretty damming. Jy has been eating shit sandwiches all year and his dissatisfaction has clearly been brewing for a while. I'd be interested to hear what Viney, as the head of our football department, has been doing about it. My guess is SFA.

I’d be asking for this guy as part of the deal, two years on their list, yet to debut has been playing half-back and mid in the VFL, had 36 disposals against us.

“An explosive athlete with speed to burn, Harry De Mattia is just as dangerous bursting out of congestion as he is hunting down opponents.”

The problem here is that Jy and Clarko should be working together not be at war with each other. This is sadly typical of our thin-skinned coach. He has small man syndrome and needs to oust any rivals: see Mitchell, Ratten, Adams, etc. We were warned of the need for strong alternative voices by Hodge when Clarkson got the job. Jy is/was the closest we had to one.

Hodge was the only one of Clarksons' seven captains at Hawthorn that lasted more than three years - and he needed to captain them to three flags to reach six years. This in itself is a good reason not to make Harry our next captain. I propose Zac Fisher.

Oh bullshit

Jy has been given a role it’s on him to either play that role, ask for a trade or play vfl

He has no divine right to make demands about where and how he has been used.

I can also get Jy's perspective.

Wardlaw is not fit. Powell refuses to chase. LDU refuses to chase. Harry lacks in transition chasing. Parker struggles to cover ground outside of the stoppage

Coach bangs on about the need for two way runners. You need to make up for these deficiencies but not from the actual midfield. Oh and you're a forward so we need you getting to the forward 50 as well.

OH and now late in the year you're a winger from now on.

It's a shit role that I have never seen it implemented and not leave the poor campaigner doing it pissed off.

I said the same thing with Will, they could be big assets to teams who have the rest of the mix in play. That is why Ned Long worked at Collingwood this year. Jy would give them another slippery inside player that could release Daicos and De Goey. They would probably focus his output on using his hands more than using it himself.

He’s an idiot who has his head stuck up his arse. Finally started playing some decent footy when moved to the wing. Should be thanking Clarko.

While he hasn't handled this the best, it's also on coaches to manage people properly and establish buy in for their roles.
Well considering Jys best games this year were in the proposed role it certainly shouldn’t have been that hard.

Pretty hard to establish buy in when a party has an over inflated sense of his own worth

I highly, highly doubt this only happened over the course of the last few weeks.

Experience probably tells him he'll spend all pre season building his tank and body for the wing and on the eve round 1 they'll have a new vision for him as a back pocket or some shit, lol.

Come off it he is better for us on the wing /hff than in the ball not only is that is my view but it is the view of the most important person in this debate, the coach.

Clarko certainly had his back when Jy got laid out in the practice match against the Saints last year. It cost him $20K from the Woke AFL. Perhaps the relationship has deteriorated progressively (Coach and Board) and Jy’s actions are him not being able to contain his frustrations anymore.

I am not sure if we have used the Leading Teams outfit, which is meant to allow for these type of situations to allow for robust debate and coming to a common understanding of what is best for the TEAM.

I agree with Hodge that we needed a Jeff Kennett type in the club who could stand up to him and challenge him in the role.
