Good luck Wellers, we will be giving you 100% support

This; out of all the guys in 2013 I think I'm most excited to see how Wellers fares and whether he can lift us to that next level and help us bring home the big one.

As soon as we got him I was wrapt, I just have this good feeling that he is really a perfect fit with our boys and will look like an Eagle from his very first game.

Wellingham to miss the first 2 rounds at least....

WEST Coast recruit Sharrod Wellingham is set to miss the first two rounds of the season after it was declared his ankle injury was more severe than first thought.

Wellingham damaged ankle ligaments when he landed awkwardly bouncing on a trampoline two weeks ago, and is still wearing a moon boot.

Sharrod Wellingham – Round 6 v Western Bulldogs

Q1
14:10 – Wellingham receives the outside ball from Gaff. From the back part of the wing he kicks up to the half forward line which is almost perfect for a backtracking Darling.
7:35 – receives a handball from Sinclair after he'd trapped the ball well. From the forward pocket tries to snap and misses the angle by a meter or two.
7:06 – received a tap from Cox in the defensive side of a stoppage on the wing. Kicks an ugly ball up to the 50m line which does not favour either forward or back.
6:35 – receives a Priddis handball from a stoppage situation on the wing. Kicks to open space at the 50m arc which overkicks Kerr and lands in Cross's lap.
5:14 – from a boundary throw-in on the back flank generates a stoppage from a good handball to Selwood.
3:00 – leads well on the wing for a mark and then hits Hill with a good 40m kick to the flank.
1:30 – again playing defensively for a stoppage on the wing. Kicks to a good position but West Coast forward crunched in between two Dogs.
0:43 – gets away some sort of handball while being slung from a stoppage in the forward 50. Does not favour any West Coast player but hardly surprising consider he was being turned in the tackle.

Q2
18:55 – receives clean tap from Cox on the forward flank. Throws ball on boot but it is smothered. Still ends up with Selwood.
15:50 – gets a loose Gaff handball but coughs it up with a handball of his own on the wing.
15:22 – reads a soft tap from Cox on the wing. Runs through the pack and collects ball at full speed. He is tackled upon grabbing the ball but breaks through and passes to Priddis who is running to space.
15:19 – Receives back from Priddis and kicks to Sinclair who is spoiled by Roughead.

Q3
18:52 - is part of a West Coast chain out of the backline. Marks a chip over the top and flicks the handball out to Priddis. This move results in a Kennedy goal.
18:28 – takes advantage from a free kick in the centre. Spears a slicing pass to to Darling who almost hangs on.
14:28 – takes the ball off a marking contest on the back 50m arc. Schofield misreads his handball and the ball is pumped back into the forward 50m by a Dogs player.
12:42 – marks from a good Shuey kick on the wing. Awful kick which Morris picks off.
5:50 – receives handball from Mackenzie in the back pocket and kicks while receiving a big hip-and-shoulder. The kick is almost good but a Dogs player gets his hands in front of the leading Eagles player on the back flank.
5:30 – shuffles ball out of contest to Shuey.
3:55 – takes the ball of a marking contest on the wing. His handball is deflected by Bulldogs arms but he manages to pick up the ricochet and set up Selwood with a small handball.

Q4
15:25 – marks a short chip by Hurn into the back pocket. Goes long to Naitanui, where the ball is thumped over the boundary line.
14:35 – drops an easy mark in the back 50 from a Smith kick. Recovers well and dummies easily around Boyd. Kicks long and really well to Schofield who marks on the wing.
6:32 – Smith hits him in the clear on the back 50. He goes for a run then centres back to Hurn who marks 20m away.
5:00 – great intercept mark on the back 50. Pumps the ball to Cox who is slightly manhandled in the marking contest.
4:40 – receives ball from a chain of handballs on the wing. Kick is slightly too high and straight to Dogs player.

Summary
There was plenty to like about Wellingham's game. Particularly he played well as the mid set up defensively from throw-ins and ball-ups on the wing. Several times in the first half Cox hit him lace out or in space.
The problem with playing this role is he needs to use it better than he did. Several times he misjudged his teammates leading. Certainly there is pressure when you are being rushed at by the opposition, so hopefully he will be able to mentally steady himself in the coming weeks and not rush himself. Having said that many of his kicks were quite creative and there were a couple of good defensive plays from the Dogs that spoiled his good work.

Another aspect that was impressive about Wellingham's game was his tackling and physicality. He was hitting the opposition players hard and making sure they earned all the possessions they had. It must've been infectious out there because Gaff started being quite physical as well. He also showed toe on one or two occasions (like when he dummied around Boyd) and competed well in the air. Perhaps would like to see him resting in the forward line at times but we were so stocked this week that it was unnecessary to have a midfield marking target there.

Sharrod Wellingham's Round 7 v Brisbane

Q1
17:15 – marks a Hutchings kick from the back 50. Goes long down the line to Cox who almost holds on to the low ball.
15:20 – great hand in to intercept on the long switch by Brisbane. Gives a one-two to Hurn.
13:30 – almost a good pack mark to Wellingham on the forward flank. Flicks out some sort of handball but surrounded by Lions.
6:15 – too ferocious in the tackle and gets Leuenberger high on the wing.

Q2
17:13 – gets a handball in the back pocket. His attempted handball is smothered by Zorko.
15:12 – gets handball from Cox, gives small handball to Scooter in the centre of the ground.
10:44 – good leading but great spoil from McGrath.
7:05 – reads the ball well in a contested situation but fumbles the ball over the boundary line.
6:05 – comes in well in front of Brown v Mackenzie and spoils the ball.
5:29 – gets a handball from Priddis in a contested situation on the wing. Gives to Rosa.
1:35 – good spoil from Wellingham on the wing.
0:05 – reads Rockliff's handball well on the back flank. Kicks long along the wing but the siren goes for half time.

Q3
6:55 – Wellingham receives from Mackenzie and then gives it back to him. The chain of handballs ends with him as he bombs it out of the back 50 to a Patfull vs Darling contest.
5:04 – gives away a free kick to Simon Black in West Coast's forward pocket.

Q4
16:10 – marks a Hurn kick on the forward flank. Goes long to Naitanui who takes a big mark over two Brisbane defenders.
15:10 – takes bouncing ball at highest point on the wing but is tackled aggressively by Yeo.
10:40 – last in a chain of handballs on the back flank. Goes long down the wing but kicks it slightly wide and OOTF.
2:10 – receives handball in back pocket from Mackenzie and gives in turn to Rosa who clears.
1:46 – receives pass over the top on the wing from Dalziell. Passes about 30m to a leading Naitanui who is spoiled by Leuenberger.

Summary
Not a good game for Wellingham. Just went missing for large parts of it. Did some good things pressure-wise but also coughed the ball up by foot a couple of times. Barely had an impact on the game and while he was playing as a leading forward couldn't seem to hold any of the marks.

Shame he is injured again. :(

Prophetic (from May 16)...

WEST Coast midfielder Sharrod Wellingham says the next step in the fight against racism is to stamp out racial abuse coming from spectators.

“There hasn’t been an on-field issue in quite a while, but the over the fence abuse has been the thing that’s come up," Wellingham said.

“I think it’s a sign of the times that players have been the ones to raise the issue that they’ve heard it.

“I think the on-field side of it is all taken care of and now it’s the part of educating the wider public."
