will the 125th AFL season be 2021 or 2022. since the 100th season was 1996 (even if the 100th year was 1997) so if the AFL goes by 1996, would the AFL be doing something in 2021 then.

An anniversary is a marking of the number of years since something occurred (ie this event occurred 100 years ago today).

That's not what the AFL were doing in 1996 - they were celebrating the 100th AFL season.

In 2008 they celebrated the 150th anniversary of the creation of the game.
When I look back on it, the funniest thing about the whole year was that their 'reenactment round' in Round 7 was 99 years after the corresponding matches in 1897!

so 2021 would be the AFL 125th season but 2022 would the 125 anniversary of the VFL/AFL founding.

The meeting where the decision was made to form a new football competition separate from the VFA was conducted on Friday October 2nd 1896. The new League's first issued constitution dates from February 1897. The first matches were played on Saturday 8th May 1897.

The 1896 date is generally given as the foundation of the League - October 2 2021 will be the 125th anniversary of the founding of the League and 2021 will the the 125th season conducted by the League. 2022 will be the 125th anniversary of the first matches.

The League became an incorporated body in 1929 - so that it could acquire the property which would become 'Harrison House' and its headquarters. Legally that meant that there was a new entity administering the competition. Its centenary in 2029 can be looked forward to - if not completely missed/ignored by everyone.

The last significant change was the clubs handing over many powers to the independent League Commission from 1985.

In 1990 the replacement of 'Victorian' with 'Australian' was just a name change - mainly for marketing purposes. I certainly won't be around to see if anyone thinks that there should be a centenary celebration of that; but if you were born in the last 20 years there is a fairly good chance (baring the apocalypse) that you'll be there to put your views on the matter.
