I don't get the Hugo dismissers. Yes he was relatively timid early on. Had to learn how to go hard and learn the role of a wingman, certainly not a natural wingman, still played junior football, but the last few years he has gradually worked those deficiencies out of his game.

He has actual pace and ball carrying ability, one of our few. He gets back to help in defence and is not afraid to go for his marks. Has a long boot on him and can kick a goal.

He may well be replaced by a better wingman down the track, but we sure don't have one right now.
Does he? A first gamer absolutely dominated him and outmarked him deep forward multiple times this year.

He can run and carry but thats about it. Doesnt find near enough ball to lock down a spot.

He busts his arse running up and down the wing, but his defensive game still leaves a bit to be desired. It might not be a popular opinion, but with KMac gone, we really need a more defensively minded wing who competes strongly in the air.

Who is this first gamer, MacIntosh and Polo got BOG's their first game as well.

Not saying he is a staying long term, but he has improved many aspects of his game and we have nobody better right now.

As I said, he is learning this role, and by and large improving in that respects. Took some good defensive marks this year and is a much better mark than MacIntosh who for his size was a pretty poor mark. Agree he has to be stronger defensively, but that is improving.

First gamers can ambush opponents who have not been able to go to school on them. Ralphsmith is not regularly outmarked deep in defence by opponents.

In any event, in the game in question where Clarke scored 3 goals, Hugo scored 2 himself and had 3 score launches to zero, and rated higher than his opponent.

Hugo is getting healthy amounts of spoils, tackles and pressure acts for a winger. He isn't Robbie Flower, but Hugo's presence in the team is no problem for Richmond.

Will be our starting winger in 2026.

Provides great run and dash between the arcs and competes ok in the air.

Can’t let him be taken deep though.

Up to the cubs to force themselves into his spot.

Our wing plays are why I’d try sought a higher teens pick this year to get Harley Barker.

Just a thought, given our wings are not a strong point, what about changing things up. We want to get games into Trainor in the back half, why not take Broad out and play him on the wing.

He would certainly fulfil the defensive wingman category. He is a very good runner, brave, good overhead, quick and has only a season or two left. In that time Trainor gets going and another wingman should be coming through.

Saying he’s best 23 at this stage isn’t saying much though considering the state of our list

Clearly has huge defensive and ball winning deficiencies.
.
Not sure he can fix those either, up against it but who knows he might surprise

Thats why he is far from Richmonds immediate problems and HRS is guaranteed best 23 for another 2 years until free agency and if he is no longer required will be allowed to leave

Definitely not guaranteed best 23 for next 2 years
Not if he keeps getting crushed 1 on 1 and defensively

I hope other players are putting pressure on HRS to ensure he is not a automatic selection each week.

100% he is guaranteed best 23 player in this side
There is not 1 winger to take his spot from him

If fit he plays every game
Yeah for now, things can change pretty quickly through out the season

not convinced he's best 18 or best 23 or even best 25. short, banks, trainor, smilie, sonzie, ross and even broad would be in my mix as our best wingers for 2026 Hugo amongst those as well but he aint walk up start

Smillie who hasn't even played a game? Nah. Not Broad either. Ralphsmith is a better winger than Trainor right now too.
