Complete surprise.

Richmond were certainly taking him with pick 20.

Hawks contemplated trading future first.

Endurance is the question mark. Skill, courage and passion is not.
That explains the intruder coming in trying to cool our expectations, Stocker was probably the one they had targeted.

On the Draft Board, Hedge Fund is the resident expert on all things Sandringham Dragons. He might be a coach there or something.

About September, someone asked him how he rates all the Dragons of the last few years as prospects as they ended their Dragons year. His order was:

1. Taranto
2. Setterfield
3. M.King
4. B.King
5. McGrath
7. Stocker
8. A.Brayshaw
10. H.Brayshaw

I'm having a mental blank on who was at 6 and 9. It wasn't Scrimshaw or Walker or Murphy. Anyway it isn't important. I remember thinking at the time that i was a bit surprised at having Taranto and Setters above the Kings and being very surprised he had Stocker above A.Brayshaw because he was so high on Andrew the year before.

Anyways the point is Setters and Stocker are highly rated internally at Sandy.

Not to be the grinch but this literally describes Nick Graham.

Not the same thing, I know. In SOS we trust
One must look at the quality of player Stocker beat to win this year's Morrish Medal compared to the quality of player Graham beat in the year of his win.

We swapped next years first round pick for Stocker (who we rated in our top ten this year) a year early (and dont underrate the value of an extra years development in him) plus a mid 1st round pick next year (likely to be spent on a trade).

Whats not to like about the deal? I'd still be OK if we wound up finishing last again (and I dont think we will - bottom 6, but not last). Its something like Pick 4-5 next year (which we would have been likely to trade anyway) for Stocker (who we rated in the 5-10 mark) and a Pick around 12-15 next year.

Really like this kid. Smart head on his shoulders, looks a smart, eloquent and well adjusted lad. Cant recall a better speaker at his age.

Goes hard at it too, and a lovely kick on both sides, plus good (quick) decision making, and a solid turn of speed. I see why we rated him highly. Pedigree is there, just needs to learn from Cripps and Murph and co, and build a stronger endurance base.

This is a huge risk by Carlton, but when Bolton fronts the playing group over the next few days and tells them 'I don't care about next year's pick' 'I think we've got the team now that can challenge for a flag' that this will have a bigger impact than another high pick next year will anyway. Bolton and co. have thrown their eggs in the one basket but it was about time they did anyway, and this has the opportunity to galvanise the entire playing list and force the kids to take the next step. It's do or die for Brendan now, and I think he knows that and is banking on this club turning the corner. We have everything we need to be a great team in place, and now the players need to back the coach who has really put his neck on the line for them. Time will tell.

This was exactly my first thought when I found out what we did. What a confidence booster for the players. When they see that the front office is backing them like this, it can only have positive effects. I'm all on board!

Congratulations Guys. I think this is a trade that works really well for both sides. Good bet from both sides.

Let’s death ride each other in good spirits next year.

Plenty of good players get picked up around pick 19 and Liam looks like another one. Welcome to this part of the draft :)

Well done, you guys have picked up an absolute future gun.
Saw a lot of him as a junior and knew straight away he will play afl.
Guts, skill and arrogance and great kid to boot.
I was actually hoping we gave up pick 4 for a couple of early first rounders and somehow snaffled him.
But no we try for another Riewoldt....oh well thats the Saints
Any way sooo jealous...enjoy watching Liam become a great player.

His list.

Taranto
B. King
M. King
McGrath
Setterfield
A. Brayshaw
Smith
Florent
Stocker
H. Brayshaw

I think the endurance side of his game is his weakness. For someone who went full time I expected something a little better. I think his competitiveness and hunger for the contest is something that shields this well. Endurance can be worked on, so I am not too bothered, but just don't think it is a strength of his right now.
Sam walsh can take him out for some extra track work
400s
k"s
distance running
bread and butter stuff really

Its a risk we absolutely needed to take.

1. Stocker is a jet and at pick 19 in the clubs eyes slided too far and opportunity was there
2. We are all in this together
3. If we are all in this together then SOS put the onus on the onfield team to improve and this is what its all about
4. I dont think the playing group knowingly what can potentially materialise for SOS and the club will want to let the club down and as a collective unit will push themselves in the off season like no tomorrow with a spike in performances..

This has multi layered ramifications not just getting one player in. Its a gamble but a gamble the club had to take NOW.

We absolutely needed a line in the sand moment.

This was Hawthorns in 2004 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line_in_the_sand_match

It just absolutely had to be done.

I think this trade fits in really well with SOS strategy. I think every one knows what type of player we will be looking at next year as a need.... a small forward type.

We have solidified our midfield now imo, and generally you don’t find these quality small forwards early in the draft but more mid 1st round.

2017
Pick 15 - Zac Bailey
Pick 17 - Jack Higgins

2016
Pick 11 - Olivier Florent
Pick 12 - Jye Simpkin
Pick 13 - Daniel Venables

2015
Pick 11 - Wayne Millera
Pick 15 - Daniel Rioli
Pick 18 - Jade Gresham
