Callum Mills

Callum Mills is one of the best young players in the AFL. The QBE Sydney Swans Academy graduate won the 2016 AFL Rising Star award and was selected in the AFL Players’ Association’s 22Under22 team in three of his four eligible years. Mills is a small defender with uncompromising courage who’s also capable of shifting through the midfield. The New South Welshman was elevated to Sydney’s leadership group during the 2018 pre-season at the age of just 21, and he’s now a member of a five-man leadership panel alongside co-captains Josh Kennedy, Luke Parker and Dane Rampe, as well as Lance Franklin.

DEBUT: 2016
DRAFT: #3, 2015 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: North Shore (NSW)

For those who missed it, it's also worth hearing that, on the topic of appointing Mills as stand-alone captain despite him missing half the season, Longmire made the point that the majority of what a captain does happens off the field. Possibly one may disagree with this and say "well, he would say that", but if it's true (I don't profess to know), then it's a salient point.

Straight to the backline for Millsy - his best position imo. Mo vacancy sign is up for this midfield

Mostly agree. Still think he'll rotate through the midfield, but it will ba luxury to have him play defence and have him up the sleeve for rotations. Hodge-like role.

With Parker, Adams and Heeney all capable of playing forward, and Errol, Warner and Jordon all capable of playing wing, we've got an incredibly versatile midfield group that will be tough for the opposition to plan for.

The likely scenario will see Mills start on the wing to get himself back to match fitness with maybe some time down back if required.

Honestly believe it would be the wrong move to have Mills go back permanently, given he was AA playing as a mid. I would much rather see Heneey and Mills team up together at centre bounces like they did in their junior years. As Paul Roos always said, Mills is a midfielder.

Yes, both Heeney and Mills are natural midfielders… the sooner Horse realises this, the better.
As you said, Cal was AA playing in midfield, and Heeney 3rd in Gary Ayres finals award playing in mids in 2016 (as a 2nd year player).
