#14 Michael Hibberd – retired. Thank you Pig ❤️

There's a balance with this stuff. No one is bigger than the club so you never prioritise recognising an individual over the success of the team. I think the club handled the Jones situation about as well as they could have in 2021.

For me the issue here is we created the situation outselves. Hibberd could have been picked as sub and it wouldn't have made any amount of difference to the team because the other guy didn't even get on the ground.

You don't get the opportunity to honour every player's retirement on the ground but when you get those chances you've got to use them.
Hibberd made some god awful decisions against the pies with Elliot which left him free, but McVee did the exact same with Docherty. Pig would have added more than twinkle toes

Absolutely should have played over Salem but not even picking him over a sub we didn't use was bewildering.

Maybe with the supporter base, but I honestly don't think it hurts the players as much these days. They have psychs and specialists looking after them 24/7. Well being is placed in higher importance than goal kicking practice. I'll be shocked if it's even mentioned. Players just aren't as invested anymore. I think our group is satisfied with the 1 flag. Rumours of players not putting in more than they have to. Fights between players at restaurants etc. Everything points to being fulfilled. The Hunger that wins you close games, big games isn't quite there. Coaches need to somehow bring that back. Not sure how with this group.
Potentially the humiliation of going out in straight sets. It’ll be mentioned, in fact it’ll absolutely be top of the list. It’s more detrimental to well being to be losing like this. Can’t imagine the players are having a big dinner party and a laugh about what a hard year it was.

Saving the post for the inevitable Mad Monday footage to come today.

Honestly, I’d not have the nerve to do that today. I’d be staying at home or going far away from Melbourne.
Jokes aside it won't actually bother me. People overreact to Mad Monday every year.

Oh I can. I honestly doubt the straight sets thing will be raised. They'll have a great time at Mad Monday and move on. Goody will probably get on the nose beers with them and tell them.all how proud he was of them.

True. Been a while since the St Kilda days of setting their entertainment alight.
Saints off-field scandals all happened when they were one of the best teams in the comp too.

Not playing Hibberd in any capacity is dropping Fritsch in 2018 levels of stupid. That was something that wouldn't have made a difference but Goodwin has since said was a mistake. Unlike the then young Fritsch, there is no next year for the pig

This'll haunt us. Not Norm Smith level curse, but seriosuly awful ******* decision making which will have implications among the culture of the team and the club.
Maybe if Hibbo had played 23 games, but he was dropped multiple times across the year and we conceded 20.13 across the finals.

Was pretty funny that he announced his retirement and we dropped him from the side, then our season ended.
"Right that'll do Pig, f%^off then".

Dunno why they didn't make him the sub at least, seeing as we obviously had no intention of using the sub we picked.

goodwin can gagf

The media team got to record his speech that he will be retiring to the players and coaches and post it on social media, thats just as good as a farewell game.

I've always been a somewhat defender of goody coaching. Sometimes he has a win, he deserves praise, sometimes he doesn't. As i said earlier in this thread it's fritsch 2018 levels of dropping, although different. In feel alone it leaves a nasty taste in your mouth

What of course makes it worse is the fact we still could have offered him a role as the sub, but we had no intention of using our sub. Maybe we did make a strong spiteful statement with not picking Grundy, we also made a s**t statement by not picking Hibberd, ******* over your loyal players

Only thing I can think of is that Goody told him he'd be playing the following week and wanted him to rest a niggle. We will never know and can only go on what we do.

Seeing Tom McDonald run around doing * all and Schache being there to replace him and they didnt even bother with it makes it all the harder to stomach. Just dreadful.

The most pathetic and predictable ending to a season I've ever witnessed, was pissing myself laughing at the end.

Funnily enough i'm rewatching our preseason game against Richmond and Dwayne goes:

"I doubt we'll never see a team not use their sub this year"

Hurts to hear
