Player Watch #15: Andrew Moore

The problem if they then both walk into our midfield is it is an indictment on our midfield and indicates Port and GWS have far superior midfields. I prefer to 'hope' they will have difficulty breaking into our midfield. They are not like Treloar. They couldn't get a game in their teams for a reason, and if it was mostly because there were too many better players doesn't build my hope for a big improvent. It just means GWS and Port still have better midfields.

Not necessarily.
It just might mean there are gaps.
And that in between those gaps might be guns that GWS/Port can't match.
FWIW, I don't remember being beaten by GWS/Port last year.

Role players don't have the box and dice.

The likes of Moore and Townsend I view as bringing improvement to other player's games as opposed to being standouts in their own right.

That said it's quite possible that with great players around them they can find improvement in aspects of their own game as well.

I'm looking forward to seeing how these players change the dynamics of the side.

Hopefully when teams take a run at us head on we can stop them cutting us open at the get go.

Reality is both Port & GWS do have better midfields than richmond

What? This is not a pissing contest. It's about making our team better. Grow up.

Really? At the end of the day ONE team wins, the other team LOSES. Therefore, by definition it is a pissing contest.

Not at all..

The sum is greater than the parts.

If we become stronger, than we win.

It is not about pride in terms of one player making one side and not the other?

What about Keven Pierterson or Andrew Strauss. Would England be embarrassed they couldn't make the SA side?

No.

Sorry. The cricket analogy makes no sense to me. Also, pride had no relevance to my post. Comparing teams is what is done week in week out on how they match up, none more so than the midfield. Miles is our shining example of one who was starved of opportunity and couldn't get a regular gig and we are all hoping one, or both, of the two similarly just needed opportunity.

Making the team stronger with the sum of the parts I agree with and how I see these two....depth. They are, or seem to be, upgrades on what we cut and will improve the team. Like some other posters, I have reservations on their ability to make us a top 4 team as MAIN players in our midfield if on their current ability they can't break into the midfields of the teams they are leaving.

It is called keeping expectations realistic. Some people seem to think they are going to give us Treloar type impact.

I don't think you understand what this means.

It is not making the team stronger with the sum of the parts, the goal is that the team is GREATER than the sum of it's parts.

That is, it's not about making the individual comparisons, it's about making the machine better as a cohesive whole by improving deficiencies.

I can't say it any simpler to explain that 'him not making the Port side, therefor they have a better midfield' is just poor logic.

Sometimes a player fits better in 1 team as opposed to another. Plenty of examples where just adding a player, makes the team much much better. Lets hope the players we picked up have this effect.

Much better, cheers.

And this is what I was looking for. Hope these players not able to break into their teams have either the ability and have been starved of opportunity or as you and others are wording it 'not well matched to their list (possibly), or they are 'solid' depth and have improved our list in that way(more likely).

My hope is I am wrong and their inability to be regular 22 at their previous clubs is in no way an indicator of deficiencies in their ability at AFL level and they both play a large number of games with good impact.

"Esteemed Adelaide football figure Mark Bickley believes new Richmond mature-age midfield recruit Andrew Moore will thrive at Tigerland."

“I think it’s an excellent pick-up (for Richmond) . . . got him for nothing, bargain-basement price, and I challenge anyway to say that his best footy’s not in front of him,” Bickley said on his 5AA program.

“He is going to be a player.

“He’s got a mature body . . . he is turn-key-go.

“He will make an impact next year, and I’m surprised there wasn’t a lot more interest (in him).”

I have been pretty vocal about why we should not get this bloke. I think the reasons given are pretty good ones. I have had my say on this.
We now have this bloke at our club it is time for me at least to embrace him, see what he brings and support him in the mean time.

While not my choice I hope he really has an impact with us and good luck to the bloke.

Yep. He's here now and you'd think he knows that it's his last chance - he either contributes or finds himself playing bush league for a few quid. Good luck to him.

So optimistic about this.

Relatively speaking he costs nothing and could reasonably thinking contribute.

In stock terms, they are the ingredient's that make an investor bullish.

Put a red flag in front of me.

There is absolutely zero risk in giving him a crack for at least a year. I don't see the big deal, he couldn't get a game at Port ahead of Wines, Gray, Ebert, Boak, Hartlett and simply had no place there anymore. Successful clubs pick up players who fill needs, they don't go out all guns blazing for an absolute superstar who takes a massive chunk of the salary cap. We got Taylor Hunt as a DFA, not a gun by any stretch of the imagination but played every game for us this season and improved the bottom 6 of our best 22. I expect similar things from Moore, yet if he doesn't cut the mustard for us and is shown the door at the end of 2016, what did we lose? A pick 100 kid in the draft who will likely never make it?

Im sure people just do their absolute best 22 and than think everyone out of that best 22 is a dud

Don't worry about form slumps, Match ups, Injuries or conditions just pick the best 22 based on a fifa style point ranking than call anyone else a dud

Can I just ask why nobody rates him?

Looking at peoples suggested round 1 sides and nobody has him in. I thought he performed quite well in both his NAB games. He was very good in close. Plenty of clearances and plenty of tackles. Disposal seemed better than you all make out too.

I like him. Think he and Towner will both line up round 1.

Same. They're not really as similar as people assume. Moore is a more rounded inside outside mid who reminds me of a lesser Cotchin

I think a lot of it has to do with him being taken as a high draft pick and not playing at that standard. Doesn't mean he can't become a "good ordinary player" for us. I'm optimistic.
