Welcome to NORTH MELBOURNE PAUL!!

INJURED midfielder Paul Ahern has been traded to North Melbourne after the Roos handed over pick No. 69 in this year's NAB AFL Draft.

Ahern, 20, has had his right knee reconstructed twice this year.

His most recent operation was in September, and North Melbourne football manager Cameron Joyce told AFL.com.au the Victorian was likely to miss the entire 2017 season.

"He's still got some rehabilitation with his knee to get over next year but we're taking a longer-term view with Paul," Joyce said.

"We've had doctors check that out thoroughly and we're certainly happy to take that on … and we can look at a start in 2018."

Ahern is a classy midfielder who can make an impact up forward. He had been contracted at the Giants until the end of 2017.

AFL.com.au reported last week the Giants were looking to offload Ahern, Will Hoskin-Elliott and Jarrod Pickett to free up salary cap space.

"[Ahern] adds some real flexibility to our team in terms of his lateral movement and his kick. He can play multiple roles through the midfield and forward," Joyce said.

Ahern was drafted at No. 7 in 2014.

Giants football manager Wayne Campbell told the GWS website the club wanted to allow Ahern a fresh start.

"Paul has had a frustrating start to his career due to injury but his determination and resilience has been admired by all at the Giants," Campbell said.

"We thank Paul for his contribution to the Giants over the past two years and wish him well for the rest of his career."

Exciting. From what I've been told he will be back playing later on next season. Considering he done the 2nd ACL in September we could see him back playing around the round 16-17 period if they are confident he can play.

Word on the street the surgeon who done Ahern and Patton's original ACL operation didn't have a particularly high success rate, of getting players back on the field for extended periods. The 2nd ACL surgery that Paul had done was from a higher profile surgeon who has a much better success rate.

Exciting times. Lots to like about Paul.

Welcome mate!!

North Melbourne has secured talented goal-kicking midfielder Paul Ahern from GWS with pick No.69.

The 20-year-old was originally drafted by the Giants with pick No.7 in the 2014 National Draft.

A former Calder Cannon, Ahern was a member of the Under 18 All-Australian team in 2014 and collected 26 disposals and a goal in that year’s TAC Cup Grand Final.

After 16 standout games in the NEAFL in 2015, Ahern tore his right anterior cruciate ligament in February this year and again in September, meaning he will be unlikely to see any action until the 2018 season.

Excellent piece of work.

Could be a 10 year player for a * all pick.
