Shattered for him. I know he will kick its ass, but just shattered he needs to go through this battle.

If you had a blank sheet of paper and were asked to describe the type of person you want at the club, you would describe Doc.

I remember after he was diagnosed with testicular cancer the first time he said something along the lines of "Everyone seems to thing this is character building, but I feel like my character has already been built enough. I must be going to have one hell of a character at the end of this"

This is going to be yet another layer to add onto the great character that this great man already is.

The Carlton Football Club is providing its full support to co-captain Sam Docherty who will undergo chemotherapy after a routine medical check-up revealed a secondary cancer occurrence to the testicular cancer that he was diagnosed with last November.

Docherty will now undergo 12 weeks of chemotherapy. He is expected to make a full recovery and is looking forward to returning for pre-season training.

“It’s obviously not the news we wanted to hear but the support I have from everyone around me in my family, friends and the footy club will get me through this next challenge,” Docherty said.

“I am very fortunate this secondary diagnosis was detected early as part of a routine check-up. We now have a clear plan in place to get through this.

“I really want to get the message out there of how important it is to be mindful of your health. If you feel something isn’t quite right, please, get checked and make sure you look after yourself.”

Carlton Head of Football Brad Lloyd said the Club was offering all the support possible to Docherty.

“We will do everything we possibly can as a footy club to help Sam and his family through this,” Lloyd said.

“Right now, Sam’s health is the number one priority and he will be given all the support he needs as he undergoes the necessary treatment to allow him to recover fully.

“Sam is an incredibly resilient person, a strong character and the entire Carlton family is behind him every step of the way.”

Gee he has had a bad run. Best wishes to him and his family.

This is horrible news. All the best Doc, hope you beat this and get back to doing what you love.
I was shattered when I found out last night. Still am. It has hit close to home. I was diagnosed with testicular cancer in December last year, Sam was November, and had it removed 2 days later the same as Sam. I have having monthly check ups and 3 monthly ct scans the same as Sam. He found out during a routine check up after his 2nd ct scan. I get my results tomorrow. Hopefully this is where I have a different path to Sam.
This is not just a physical battle. This is a very tough mental battle too. It is hard, very hard. Not easy to remain positive when the outcome is beyond your control.
Wishing Sam all the best with this battle. Luv ya Doc. Fight the good fight
