Totally different.

I didn't see enough of Johnston to rate. Lade > Primus >>> Brogan over the journey.

Primus was such a dominating ruck prior to the rule change, but Lade was such a clever and effective footballer and held his own in competing for AA honours against 2 of the greatest ruckmen of all time in Cox and Sandi. Lade had the body of the old fashioned lumbering ruckman combined with a brilliant football mind and terrific skills for his size.

Ryder is probably ahead of Brogan but behind the other two. If I had to pick 1 from our AFL era, it's probably Lade.
I agree with all of this.
Johnston was an excellent ruckman for us (& fine captain too). On face value he would have been a back-up ruckman for Primus and Lade, perhaps on par with Ryder & ahead of Brogan for the position. He was a skinny dude, so unless he was able to bulk up he would probably have trouble against the more modern professional bigger-bodied guys. Tantalising to think what it would have been like to have him in our AFL era.

Trouble is Johnston was shorter than Tredrea. He wouldn't have rucked in the AFL in the 21st century.

In a 1924 interview of Jack McGargill he lists the following players as the best in his time:

Best player: Goodie Hamilton (rover) "A rover of exceptional ability"
Best ruckman: Welshie Davis (ruck man)
Best kick: Francis Hansen (Full forward) "Frank could get goals from almost any angle"
Best defender: Percy Gardiner (defender) "His dash and reliability were simply wonderful"

He also said in 1924 that Harold Oliver was "the finest footballer the state has produced".

Tregenza maybe gets an honourable mention.

Harold McDonald?

Actually, you could almost make a "Second 22" from the unlucky ones in the post 1970 era. Guess it is because we remember so many players from that era as we lived through it, whereas the earlier periods are only names to most of us, and we only do on historical records - rather than having seen them at their peak and thus able to speak from a position of authority.

Great thread this, btw.

1970 - present covers my lifetime so it's the only one I can give a proper opinion on

B - Michael Wilson, Darryl Wakelin, Gavin Wanganeen
HB - Bruce Abernethy, Greg Phillips, Martin Leslie
C - Craig Bradley, Russell Ebert, Bruce Light
HF - Chad Wingard, Warren Tredrea, Travis Boak
F - Robbie Gray, Scott Hodges, Brendon Lade
R - Matthew Primus, Roger James, Brian Cunningham

Int. - Chad Cornes, Peter Burgoyne, Tim Evans, Tony Giles

Coach - John Cahill

Too many special mentions to be able to narrow it down

Agree with 90% of your side but there is no way Tim Evans doesn't make any Port side, i watched him from 75 to 85 and I still think he is a bit underrated in SANFL history and amongst some Port supporters. His goalkicking feats are remarkable and a huge part of our success in the late 70's early 80's.

Greg Anderson won a Magarey ('86) when SANFL was still very strong.

I think he has to be in this side.

I've got him on the bench. For me it's a coin toss between him and Scotty for who could be picked at full forward.

Im not sure how Evans and Hodges would have gone on same forward line.

I think one would have to be on the bench.

Ridiculous...
Neither played CHF. Hodges played on a flank early in his career, but was quite average.

If they both played deep in attack they probably would have gotten in each other's way.

During their respective eras they were the absolute focal point of the forward line.

1970–2020 wings?

Greg Anderson
Kym Kinnear
Craig Bradley
Bruce Light

Others?

Bruce Abernethy

Could make a case for Byron Pickett.

Cant believe nobody has mentioned Tim Ginever, 314 games and inspirational captain.
The other player who would be in my 22 is Peter Woite absolute gun in the 1970's and in Port's team of the century.

What are peoples thoughts so far?
I have a feeling our teams will vary quite a bit.

I'll chop and change with peoples suggestions.

Rules
  • Played majority of career in period OR debuted in period at a high level of performance.
  • If the player moved clubs ONLY consider their form whilst at Port Adelaide (ie Tom Harley wouldn't get a look in).

note sure about Peter Woite, should moving to Glenelg disqualify him from this?;)
