I'll chop and change with peoples suggestions.

Potter in pre 1970 side, but not as a Wingman.

Hodges was quite average as a forward flanker circa 87....only became an elite SANFL player when moved to FF.

John Cahill has to be a wingman in the 1920-70 side. He retired at the end of 1973 and is named on the wing in the greatest team 1870-2000 and played most of his 29 state games on the wing.

Bruce Light, Tony Giles, Darren Mead, Tim Ginever and Mark Williams deserve mentions here somewhere.

I remember Leslie as a HBF and Phillips as CHB.

If Bradley qualifies then so does Buckley, but I'm nit-picking :)

Trevor Obst - not half back flank, toss up between him and Dick Russell for back pocket. Russell, good as he was, had his career start delayed by the war (hon. mention).
RHB - Basil Jaggard
Centre - Dave Boyd
RHF - Motley because of his 7 goals from there in 2nd half 1957 GF.
Rex Johns - full forward, never CHF as he couldn’t kick the distance.
Ian Hannaford - move to CHF.
Lloyd Zucker - bring in as 1st ruck
Peter Obst - LHF
Roger Clift - CHB (edges out Graham Cooper)
Eric Freeman - hon. mention, his career interrupted by test cricket.
Neil Hawke - hon.mention for 24 goals in two matches in 1957.

Nathen Buckley ??

Yeah I'm in the "if Bradley makes it Buckley does" camp. His 1992 season was one of the greatest single seasons by a Port player.

Is it best players or some guys who were gooder for longerer.

A couple of players to consider for CHB in the 1920 -1970 side

Marx Kretschmer played in 6 premierships 1951-8. He was named at CHB in two and back pocket in another two. Very versatile he also played forward and on ball. Played 143 games for Port and 4 state games.

Graham Cooper played CHB in 3 premiership sides, 1962-63 and 65. Played 118 games for Port and 3 state games.

We might as well include Hayden Bunton senior then for his 1945 season then.

Bradley won B&F's in 1982 as 18/19 year old, 1984 and 1985 as well as contributing as a 17 year old in 1981 finals and would have been more if he didn't get glandular fever and miss most of the season after debuting in Rd 4 or 5. In 1983 he would have won the B&F if he didnt go to England with the U/19 Oz cricket team. He probably would have won the Magarey Medal.

So no cricket tour means he would be the only person to have won 4 B&F's in a row for Port. Harry Tick Phillips won 3 in a row in 1891-3 and then it did not again until Robbie Gray did it in 2014-16.

Fos' best team he coached 1950-1973, you would think that this would dominate a 1921-1970 team. His team he named in Dynasty was as follows and in bold are those who IMO played their best footy post 1970.

B.. Dick Russell..... John Abley.... Doug Spiers
HB Peter Woite.... Roger Clift.... Neville Hayes
C Bruce Light... Russell Ebert.. John Cahill
HF Dave Boyd.... Ian Hannaford... Geof Motley
F Jeff Potter.......... Rex Johns..... Paul Marrett
R Lloyd Zucker.... Ted Whelan..... Fos Williams
Res Ron Luke (1951 flag and only 46 games), Harold McDonald (5 flags), Ray Whittaker (2 flags), Peter Marrett (2 flags)

I'm surprised that neither of Trevor (4 flags) or Peter Obst (6 flags) made Fos' side. Neither did 6 times premiership player Marx Kretschmer.

The club named a a few of Fos' players in a different position in the Greatest Team compared to where Fos put them;

Geof Motley Fos HFF GT had him at HBF
Ted Whelan Fos RR GT had him at BP
Jeff Potter Fos FP GT had him on the bench
Peter Woite Fos HBF GT had him on the bench
Lloyd Zucker Fos R GT had him on the bench

Fos had the following players in the same position as the GT;
Dick Russell, John Abley, Neville Hayes, Russell Ebert, John Cahill, Dave Boyd and Fos Williams

Fos' best team he coached 1950-1973, you would think that this would dominate a 1921-1970 team.
Any team from a later era should beat one from an earlier one, just by the increased height and training times across eras. Our 2018 side would wipe the floor with a best 1870-1990 side, if all were at their peaks, just by sheer size, strength and fitness, despite not being in the ballpark for pure football skills.

By dominate I mean dominate players selected. You are picking the team on relativities not absolutes. Of course the best player of 2019 will be a better player than the best player of 1971, because as you say he is bigger, stronger, faster probably more skilled as he is a full timer vs a part timer.

Always an impossible task to compare players from different eras.

Harold Oliver was tall for his era. Today he would be shorter than average in the AFL.

We might as well include Hayden Bunton senior then for his 1945 season then.

Was Bunton's season top draw or are you including his name because of what he did at Fitzroy. A bit different to my argument.

And there are a lot of coulda shoulda moments in your comments about Bradley.

I'm saying Buckley should be included for his time at Port and nothing else that came after. His 1992 season was literally perfect.

Yeah he was past his prime whilst at Port Adelaide playing a role similar to Luke Hodge at Brisbane recently. Invaluable to the side but past his best individually. Still garnered a couple Magarey votes.

Not necessarily, if it was umpired to "pre-1990" ish rules and 'standards', or played at grounds in 'average' conditions for that era. Our sides weren't usually notable as the *most* skilled, but as the most professional and the hardest by the standards of the day, and regularly humbled "more skilled" sides for a century. Lightning fast modern flat track at current rules - the less congested centre bounces, chopping the arms rule, our hair-trigger umpiring out of most rough stuff - totally different story.

Peter Obst, Lloyd Zucker and Roger Clift for possible 1920 to 1970 extended squad?

Buckley and Andy Obst interesting post 1970 possibles. The time they were with Port were excellent seasons., but not long periods.i would select them.

May need to apply some qualifications to selections. Bunton's and Hank's only seasons during WW2 I do not know enough about tocomment uthoitatively on.

In the post 1970 era I ha e Kutchie at CHB, Chad in place of Schulz, and Delaney at FB.

How would people rank Russell Johnston, Matthew Primus, Brendon Lade, Dean Brogan, Paddy Ryder?

They are all completely different.

Totally different.

I didn't see enough of Johnston to rate. Lade > Primus >>> Brogan over the journey.

Primus was such a dominating ruck prior to the rule change, but Lade was such a clever and effective footballer and held his own in competing for AA honours against 2 of the greatest ruckmen of all time in Cox and Sandi. Lade had the body of the old fashioned lumbering ruckman combined with a brilliant football mind and terrific skills for his size.

Ryder is probably ahead of Brogan but behind the other two. If I had to pick 1 from our AFL era, it's probably Lade.

Brogan is clearly behind Primus, Lade and Ryder. He's viewed with rose coloured glasses because he was a good old-fashioned Port Adelaide player and he was around for our flag, but based purely on talent and output he's not even close to the other three.

In a 1924 interview of Jack McGargill he lists the following players as the best in his time:

Best player: Goodie Hamilton (rover) "A rover of exceptional ability"
Best ruckman: Welshie Davis (ruck man)
Best kick: Francis Hansen (Full forward) "Frank could get goals from almost any angle"
Best defender: Percy Gardiner (defender) "His dash and reliability were simply wonderful"
