Clearly he has researched all eras, including positions played, and whether sufficiently qualified. I have no qualms about going with his 1870 – 1920 side. Names appearing multiple times on the Club’s Honor Board, in on-line lists of pre-1997 PAFC players, and in our Hall of Fame, etc mean names such as Oliver, Hosking, Congear, Ashley, Tompkins, Hansen, Quinn Snr, Hosie, Londrigan and Phillips pick themselves. The others, well tbh I would not have a clue about most, but he has undoubtedly picked them for good reason. The only names that come to mind from that era not included may be Stan Malin and Jack Mack – perhaps they get inclusion on the “extended squad’?

I have just added a couple of extras and shuffled some spots around in the 1920 – 1970 side.

For the 1970 – 2020 side, there are a great many players from the 1977 to 1999 period who accumulated vast numbers of games, swags of flags, multiple individual awards and accolades, etc and thus there are so very many that most of us watched at some point that we feel deserve consideration. So many, that I made up a “Second 22” from the extended bench. It meant that a few players were played out of position though!

Rules:

• Played majority of career in period OR debuted in period at a high level of performance.
• If the player moved clubs ONLY consider their form whilst at Port Adelaide (ie: Tom Harley wouldn't get a look in)
• Our “Greatest Team’ only had 100 games as qualification – as we are having teams from three era’s, make it either 50 games minimum, or at least one season at an elite level. If the former, Buckley and Bunton don’t make it. If we go with the latter, they are eligible, but may not have played elite footy enough to warrant being picked (a fascinating discussion – maybe list them as “honorable mentions” with an asterisk and a double question mark next to their names)
• What do we do for players who represented us during the War years in “composite” sides? Bob Hank for one. TBA.

He also only played more than 13 games in a season for us twice, only kicked more than 22 goals a game in a season for us twice, never so much as sniffed an AA or a B&F, and was eventually delisted (not retired, delisted) at the age of 29 after 83 games for the club. Michael Pettigrew and Matt Thomas played more FFS.

Meanwhile the RFP in your 'seconds' team had achieved more by his 21st birthday than Motlop achieved in his entire career.

That is the key issue for me in making many of these decisions.

So if a dominating season is key this means that Buckley has to be a starting ruck rover for 1992. The utter domination of the Primus-Francou combination in what was essentially a National Competition in 2001-2 demands their inclusion to complete the ruck. Although by today's rules Primus would be severely hampered.

By way of qualification, I didn't see enough of many of our key backs before the mid 90's to equitably compare. However I think Chad Cornes 2004 season was one of the best I have seen from a port defender and I'd still love to have that Chad in our current team as an attacking defender.

One could only salivate at the prospect of the potential in a forward line containing Tredrea, Hodges, Evans and Gray. Although noteworthy that Evans and Hodges would not be considered as Key Forwards both being under 190cm.

It's oh so entertaining to speculate about all this.

And then consider that was a consistent level for big Kutchie. And he played on until 1993, commanding that position until that time.

I remember watching it as a kid, and another time a few years later.

Without doubt I've missed a lot of such performances, and I have a lot of love for Greg Phillips. My father was DJ at his wedding because I knew his wife and her sister from primary school. The condition of many of the players at the reception is another story in itself . Certainly Greg is one of the greats, and as imposing a CHB as the game has seen based on what I did see, and the reports I heard. Certainly his record speaks for itself.

That's the issue though - I did see Cornes's season. It was a gem for that iteration of the Power, in an essentially national competition. Which raises the point that some players fit perfectly into a particular team cut, which I was I would choose Primus AND Francou. Had they not played together it may well be I would be here adamant that Lade and one of about four other ruck rovers should be in the starting team, with Lade also being such a handy, skilled forward who could play 99% of a game on the ground.

Maybe Phillips does play CHB, and Cornes is interchange to pinch hit for Phillips or whoever else may struggle on the day, as he was incredibly versatile at his peak. Depends how you want to structure the team and your bench and what value is placed on versatility. It certainly would make the coach sleep more easily to have Ebert, Gray and Wanganeen to throw about the place.

Had his limitations - was he the only wingman in history who didn’t know how to bounce a ball properly? - but man the sky was the limit for him in those days. Perpetual motion in an era where it was a rare commodity.
