Courtney Webb a multi-skilled sporting talent

December 29, 2014 11:30pm

TEENAGER Courtney Webb will have some tough choices to make in the coming years on which sport she wants to pursue – if 2014 is anything to go by.

Webb, who has only just turned 15, was selected in four Tasmanian sides across three different sports this year, highlighting her all-round prodigious talent.
The Riverside High student was picked in the state under-18 AFL girls team, the state under-18 tennis team and the under-15 Roar Cubs squad – which she captained – all aged 14.

AFLW: Four Tasmanian athletes aim to make mark at footy draft combine

Tomorrow, the teenager will be one of four Tasmanians among almost 50 aspiring footballers at the first ever women's draft combine in Melbourne.
The two days of assessments — including kicking and handball drills designed to test distance, accuracy and trajectory, as well as personality testing — will be the last chance to impress AFLW recruiters and coaches before the draft on October 18.

Then just days later, Webb will be hoping to be picked to make her Women's National Cricket League debut for the Tasmanian Roar this weekend.

Great pick up getting Courtney, guys. What stands out about her to me is how clean she is generally with her skills. She was without a doubt best on ground in the state league grand final this year and won the medal to prove it. Look forward to seeing her play at the next level.

Courtney Webb (Launceston, TAS)
Position: Midfielder
One of only four Tasmanian players invited to the recent AFLW Draft Combine, Courtney Webb certainly proved her stamina, making the top ten in the yo-yo and the 2km time trial.
The 17-year-old Webb will turn 18 a few days after the draft, and is a great talent with exceptional skills and strong footy knowledge which she demonstrated in a best-on-ground performance for Launceston in the TSLW Grand Final. She has been a part of Tasmanian state teams since she was 15.
Webb, also a talented cricketer who is listed as a rookie for the Hobart Hurricanes and is hoping to play for the Tassie Roar in the National Women’s Cricket League, is familiar with the expectations of elite sport. But it’s exactly her cricketing prowess that may worry some clubs, with the challenge of juggling two sports already presenting problems for some AFLW players.
If not picked up in this year’s draft, we would expect Webb to be picked up by North for the 2019 season.

Draft notes: Given there are only 20 draft picks for Victorian clubs this year, Courtney Webb may just miss out when all is said and done, despite being one of Tasmania’s best midfield options. It’s certainly not a knock on her ability, however. If she misses out this year, she will be a required player for North Melbourne next year.

Coming along nicely with the bat, and Carlton usually gets a mention in commentary when her athleticism is on display, like this catch last night:
