VFL watchers: What is the go with this guy? AFL standard or no?
I think he's got lots of potential.

Poor mans version of Joe but still can play a role.

Works really hard, is physical comparative to his size, and his kicking is pretty reliable.

I personally believe playing three talls forward is not ideal.

I think it depends on the talls. Bellchambers, Hartley and Hooker in the same team doesn't work because you end up with two of the three at either end at any one time and they're not agile enough. Play too many and you might as well field a team of witches hats. Joe is different to the others though, and I don't know where Stewart sits as I haven't seen him play.

I agree on the witches hats.

Too many talls plus our slow midfielders and it's no surprise we haven't been able to consistently provide pressure around the ball.

I would say Stewart is not quite as fast and agile as joe but a big upgrade on hooker in that department.

Hooker bests compliment Joe though so that's what I feel is holding Stewart out.

The story goes that he is a tall that doesn't really play like one, which could be a positive or a negative.

I get that we don't want to go too big, but if he is even half decent in the ruck surely it'd be worth it to keep joe foreard kicking... well kicking at goal anyways. We were happy to carry francis i don't see the difference between that and having a spot on the pine used mostly for a chop out ruck.

Why? Adelaide plays what is essentially four talls. GWS plays three talls. Geelong is struggling its way back to playing three talls.

Height is almost irrelevant given the respective attributes of two of the proposed talls.

Daniher and Stewart have defensive work rates that are almost at Fantasia's level. Neither could be said to be less mobile than Lynch and McGovern (who I assume are numbers 3 and 4). They're both a long way in front of Patton and Lobb and I'd say are easily on par with Cameron.

Both have much better mobility and work rates than Green.

Depending on his game style either;
  • He plays Hooker's role better than Hooker does (stay at home forward)
  • He plays Joe's role better than Joe does (roaming up the ground more) and forces Joe to stay home - unlikely
  • He plays in a third-tall type role, competes with Langford and Francis for a spot
  • We play him and Joe as two talls up the ground, but there will be less/no midfield rotations for Walla, Fanta, Colyer, Green, Francis/Langford
  • In a two-ruck set up, he and TBC/Leuey play as the second tall when they're not rucking. Do either of them draw a defender and provide a consistent marking presence though?

I personally believe the setup we have now is the ideal setup but like the rest of the team it's inconsistent.

I don't think their is any point comparing our teams to teams above us either because any team that's competing for a top four spot will have one thing in common that we won't, continuity of playing together over a long period! Rarely does a team make top four from a bottom four position if ever.

For me it's about playing together and getting to the point that each teammate knows what the other is doing.

Bulldogs aside from last year it is usually the team that makes the least changes and commits to their brand wins the premiership.

I personally believe Woosha is still working out what his best lineup is so before the year is out you may get your wish in regards to playing more talls.

We aren't winning the flag this year so this is as good a time as any to work out the winning formula.

There is nothing Green is doing that Stewart won't be able to do. Would love to see him come in and play alongside Hooker & Daniher. He is not a KPF, so I don't really want to see him alone with just Daniher, ideally he is suited to the 3rd forward role.

As a style of player he is something between Mitch McGovern and Jack Watts. I think that he is closer to being a KPF than you think but that it is a work in progress and that his mobility enables him to play essentially as a half forward.

We just need to drop Green and Howlett and bring in any combination of Langford, Francis, Mutch, Redman or Stewart.

Howlett and Green simply aren't midfield rotations and not playing young blokes with potential ahead of them makes no sense.

VFL watchers: What is the go with this guy? AFL standard or no?
He definitely plays like it in the VFL although I don't remember being that impressed with him in the JLT games.

Definitely will get a go soon.

Would be so bloody exciting to see guys like him, francis, langford, bellchambers and myers all playing well in the AFL so that we actually know we have this depth we have all been going on about.

We should really be wanting Ambrose and Brown to have to work really hard to get their spots back when they recover from their respective injuries.

Would also love to see Howlett and Hocking get another run and play some good footy but I think it may have gone past them. Really hope I'm wrong.

I think Ambrose and Brown to a lesser degree are senior fixtures now.

Ambrose in particular has a place in the backline pretty much assured. He would only come through the VFL for fitness reasons not to earn a spot back.

Yeah fair call re Ambrose, he has been the big surprise packet of the last 2 years for me (apart from Tippa)

Had given up on him pretty much.

Its probably why I come last in super coach every year.
