Essendon: James Stewart

GWS Giants: Pick 77

THE Bombers parted for virtually nothing to get Stewart and have benefited enormously as a result of his arrival. He’s kicked 12 goals from nine games and is having an impact each week. This could prove one of the best value trades conducted throughout this trade period.
I raved about this after his game against West Coast. The fact he was basically free speaks volumes of the work done by Dodoro and co to get him, but also the most outrageous talent pool at GWS' disposal. Any other club with their amount of injuries would be sitting anywhere between 10th to 18th, yet they're top four.

Insane.

If he had to be the anchor for our forwardline he would probably struggle at this stage of his career.

But give him another couple of years to develop his marking and he along with Joe is going to be very formidable forwardline pairing.

And have a look at the amount talented players at other clubs....nearly could have a premiership team with what they have offloaded. Yeah it is insane. It is going to take a lot of fails in who they draft before their talent pool comes back to the pack.

Stewart has been building to a game where he eventually gets a big haul of goals (4+) and this very well could be it.
Arguably he could have had that game last week, but I digress. He's becoming more and more a complete, dual-threat forward every week with his leading and his work rate.

He's building very nicely.

Still a couple of years away from seeing his best.
Yeah this is a development year as he had only played 18 games at AFL level at GWS over 4 years.
Also the difference between him at GWS and Essendon is we have rarely played him in the ruck. Which is something with his frame (most rucks have 10kgs on him) he has always struggled with. He needs to play only as the 3rd tall fwd and coaches have identified that.

Considering the role he plays as effectively a half forward and not the focal point he is contributing really well.
Like you say, GWS couldn't really give him enough time to develop him properly due to having an abundance of forwards to choose from but his progress this year I think along with McKenna has been our best.

I have no doubt that he can be ready to play a more focal point in a couple of years when Hooker starts slowing down.

I would be interested to know how early Dodoro started tapping him up because surely we weren't the only club enquiring about him.

Carlton board thought they had him wrapped up, has made it all the more glorious that we snagged him and he's playing well. :thumbsu:

It's a good sign that we can sell the club to the right players as well, suggests that this year's trade and FA period will be even more fruitful.

We swiped him from under the noses of Collingwood and Carlton who's best key forward average 1.4 and 1.5 goals per game respectively. This bloke averages 1.4 goals a game playing as our third tall.

Should have kicked 6 or 7 in the last two weeks. Has missed some sitters (which he showed no signs of missing in his first 8 or so games).

I reckon that he has been adding more layers to his game for the last four weeks. He's now a very good player.

Not sure he was ever going too the pies after the way they treated him while doing year 12/in his draft year. Family wasn't happy with the pies at all after that.
