So basically he has had a set back... can't imagine someone as determined as Alex giving up on the year given all talk was "he wants to play and believes he will play"
He met with his surgeons earlier this week, probably as simple as they advised against it and thought there was still a decent chance of re-injury this early.

Good to see him building towards 2020 though. With him and evolved Grimesy at one end, and Jack and Tom at the other, we’d have close to the best Twin Towers combo at both ends of the ground.

Best part is guys like Grimes and Vlastuin have really grown in his absence, that can only help us long term.

Adding Rance at full flight next year is going to be ******* MASSIVE

Good call - defence has adapted and is operating beautifully in his absence.
One has to wonder, if he had made a come back this year, what sort of destabilisation would the adding of such a big fish into a stable set-up have caused???

He hasn't had a set back. He tried to do something extraordinary.

While I’m sad we won’t get to see Rancey out there in September this year i’m Happy that they’re not going to risk it.

Work towards 2020 Rancey and hopefully back to back!

When all the posters who had undergone knee reconstructions on here were saying the same thing about the timing and the graft, it became obvious that bringing Rance back this season would not be sensible. Well done to all those people for talking good sense into us. And well done to Rance and Richmond and the medical people involved for making a sound decision.

Props to him for trying. If anything, all this work he put in now means that when he returns next year he should be close to as good as new.

I’m gonna say it’s more likely his recovery wasn’t coming along quite fast enough if he wanted to make a miracle return

A sensible decision. Imagine if he returned in a final and got injured again before the GF (should we make it). He’d have another set back, and if we win the Premiership, he still would not be a 2X Premiership player by the end of the year.

I’d prefer playing it safe with him so that he doesn’t risk another ACL injury
