Re: 18. Matthew Lloyd

I think that supposed controversial article the other week was blown entirely out of proportion. Didn't really say anything that he hadn't already said at his retirement announcement.

There's a Lloydy article on the Fox Sports site:

EXCLUSIVE: Retired Essendon champion Matthew Lloyd concedes he struggled to shrug off the media criticism directed towards him during the initial years of his career at Windy Hill.

Talks about the media pressure, his new media job, briefly touches on the McPhee decision etc.

He's also been nominated for the Madden Medal (as well as the Football Achievement Award) which took place earlier this afternoon. Haven't heard any news if he won or not though.

Re: 18. Matthew Lloyd

Lloydy ended up missing out on the Madden Medal (winner was former Swan Michael O'Loughlin), but he won the Football Achievement category. Definitely well deserved :thumbsu:

Re: 18. Matthew Lloyd

Today's Sunday Herald Sun is reporting that Lloydy is planning on playing some games for his old club Avondale Heights. They club is hoping to make it official in the coming week.

The thought of Lloyd and Lucas on opposing teams is very strange, but glad they can go back to playing footy mainly for fun.

Also, Matty and Lisa were at the opening of the TAG Heuer boutique in Melbourne the other day:

And he's also been a part of AIS-AFL training sessions with the other assistant coaches:

Re: 18. Matthew Lloyd

Our former ruckman Steve Alessio mentioned on his Twitter that Lloydy (as well as another champion in Fletch) were doing the Level 2 coaches course last week.

Would certainly love to see the both of them as specialist coaches at Essendon in the future!

Re: 18. Matthew Lloyd

If anyone is interested, Lloydy will be captaining one of the teams at the Avondale Heights Legends Match on March 28th. More info is available on the AH website

You can also hear/read what he had to say about Lovett on the SEN website.

Re: 18. Matthew Lloyd

Not sure if this "flippant comment" is worth a whole article in the Age. But Lloyd was supposedly given and offer under Hird and Thompson to return.

Lloyd says no to comeback

MATTHEW Lloyd last night revealed the door had been slightly ajar for a stunning on-field return to Windy Hill this season under the Bombers' new coaching dream team.

With favourite sons James Hird and Mark Thompson already locked into the senior coaching positions as part of a major club overhaul, another new face, assistant coach Brendan McCartney, made a "flippant comment" to Lloyd about playing again when the champion forward met officials about a potential part-time coaching role late last year.

While the remark may have been canvassed somewhat as a joke, McCartney already had a particular pick in last year's national draft in mind for a possible Lloyd comeback.

...

This book is the story of a kid driven by a fear of failure to climb the highest peaks in football. Of a young footballer who taught himself a process to become the most accurate shot for goal in the AFL after a tirade from one his coaches. It is how a boy with natural ability became the captain of the Essendon Football Club, a premiership player and a life member of the AFL.

And now it is about the transformation into devoted father and a multi-media expert on AFL when it looked like from the outside his career was cut short before its time; of a testy relationship with his final coach and the bone crunching hit that saw him finish his time as a player on suspension. It looks at how he considered a future with other clubs before deciding to retire on his terms.

Above all, it is a brutally honest account of an astonishing career from a man who is a straight shooter in more ways than one.

It's going to be released on the 1st August 2011.

As a big Lloydy fan I'm definitely looking forward to this. The chapters on 2009 should be interesting...

You can now pre-order a signed copy of Straight Shooter from the Bomber Shop. It also comes with a magnetic Lloyd bookmark and has an extra page with a printed handwritten note to Essendon fans in it.

There is going to be a dinner at the Ebony Quill in Camberwell on August 2nd where he'll present the book and sign copies of it. Tickets are $50 for Dymocks Booklovers or $55 for others.

He's also doing signings at Dymocks on Collins Street on August 2nd and at Collins ABC Werribee on August 7th.

You can now read the start of the book on the Random House website.

Can't wait to get my copy in the mail!

Who's the new fav, Fraz???
Sorry it's taken me so long to reply. I don't really have a new favourite. I mean, Hille seems more intelligent than your regular footballer, Fletch is a champion and Zaharakis is handsome, but nothing like my Lloydy 'obsession'. Now that I'm older than the new players coming through it would feel kind of creepy to have that same sort of feeling about them.

Is he really on The Footy Show?

Could've sworn I saw him on the promo.

Yeah, looks like it.

Lloyd's best asset is that he pulls no punches when it comes to actual football analysis, not that he's a laugh riot. A good fit for the Sunday Footy Show for sure, but sure as hell not the Regular Footy Show.

I can - Matthew Lloyd was a horrible commentator. Not his fault, the words he said were decent enough, but his voice and the flow of his words and so forth was terrible.

I'd sacrifice the lack of fluency and oration for the quality of what was being said which outstrips Darcy's contributions in every way.
