He's a modern day Robert Harvey.
Hopefully he goes past them by the end of the yearA long way to go in order to match Harvey's career achievements
I just watched a highlights package of Harvey and he was just extraordinary at making his way through traffic, either by shaking off tackles or evading them completely. He's got a pretty stunning set of goals that he kicked over the journey too. Harvey obviously maintained his standards over 20 years and 383 games with 8 x All Australian selections, 2 x Brownlows etc but Walsh has really hit the ground running early in his career. In a successful side with a complementary midfield, you can see him earning more plaudits over the upcoming years. He IS. That's a good comparison. A long way to go in order to match Harvey's career achievements, but in terms of style of play, very much so. The whole "vanilla" characterization makes sense: Walsh (nor did Harvey, really) doesn't to do anything particularly extraordinary. Not an amazing kick, not especially big, not explosively fast, not a high-flyer. But just happens to be utterly elite at getting to contest after contest and linking up. Right place, right time, repeatedly, relentlessly.

He doesn’t train with them. They follow him around. He lets them.Did he train today with the main group?

Played in the middle since he started … unlike other “gun” players who’ve played their first seasons floating at Half backApologies if wrong thread, but on rewatch of the last nights game I cannot understate Walsh’s natural footballing ability. He’s almost robotic in he way he shifts his weight, body, knees around in the contest.
So lucky to have such an elite footballer.
We’ve cooked him. Look at how other clubs deal with elite midfielders. They stick them on halfback to rack up easy possessions then transition them to the midfield. Instead we throw them into the middle straight away and ‘lo and behold’ they blow up after 5 years.Walsh can get lighter on his feet and maybe lighten his salary until he produces something again.
Not a genuine inside-outside mid, that's a fantasy, and his production has not been in the same tier as our other high class players for a while.
Frustrating to watch his career trajectory.
You hearing anything re the general view of the list or coaches as a whole Red?Walsh was a non-factor tonight but he will come good. The injury interrupted pre-season (again) is very difficult to overcome and takes time. With the January hammy we are genuinely lucky he was even back for the start of the season - it’s a testament to his professionalism.
Adding to him being underdone, our stagnant game plan doesn’t exactly make it easy for outside runners to find space and gather link up possessions.
If we go another 2-4 weeks and it’s the same old story, I am happy to reassess. But until then, I have full faith he will be back to his best soon. In my opinion, we have much bigger concerns elsewhere.

Wow, funny how the guy who missed a chunk of pre-season took a few games to build up his fitness and is now back performing like one of the best mids in the league - who could’ve seen that coming? Hopefully a lesson to be learned for the Chicken Littles out there.Walsh was a non-factor tonight but he will come good. What a performance though. Freak. Such a weapon.
Since this discussion:
- Contested possessions and clearances have gone down slightly
- Uncontested possessions and disposals - mostly through handballs - have skyrocketed
- Tackle count and pressure acts have mostly plummeted
- He darkens the door of the defensive 50 now
- His CBA rate has dropped from targeting 65-70%, to targeting 45%
His role changed, like pretty much everyone who has ever watched him play was saying it needed to when he was able. New fitness staff are doing wonders in terms of our burst speed across the list, and glad to see Walsh is benefitting.
I don't doubt fitness was an issue, and you can see that in the way he was used in R1 against Richmond, but he was in a silly role around the contest for his natural skillset.
I’m not across the terms yet sorry, but done deal.Bump (because of Chris). 7 more years...?
Love your work. My question was more for wider conjecture. It's been a good day with news re Lij and Derksen, and this Walsh news is just an incredible addition. Thanks again!I’m not across the terms yet sorry, but done deal.
