They simply weren't.

Here's the 1963 premiership team

More than half of the team was bog average, at best

The bolded blokes were A Graders, and some of them could arguably be described as "generational talent"

Multiple times interstate rep,multiple Captains and a best and fairest player among those bog average players Fred.

Yes, true, and ditto Yeates in Q4, but overall they were just average

The legendry Jack Dyer who was no mug - was commentating( radio/tv) one year and said - i think John Yeates can win the Brownlow Medal - so Yeates was ok

And i think you are also a little bit harsh on Tony Polinelli ( who did finish 2nd in a Stawell Gift - so was very quick ) but Francis Bourke when playing on the wing - part of that famed Rich centreline of Bourke/Barrot/Clay - rated Polinelli as one of his better//hardest opponents
