I was rummaging around at home doing some cleaning and found an old football record, 1962 grand final Ess v Carl to be exact.

I've read it cover to cover, so good! Step back in time. Thought I'd post it in picture form if anyone wants to read. So much gold from the ads, the letters to the editor ect..

some things that caught my eye...

doug wade wins the goalkicking award (not yet the coleman) wins 100 pounds and a 'handsome barometer'

the letters to the editor were written to phillip morris - the letter of the week won 200 cigarettes!

twisties had three beaut flavours! cheese, chick'n (not chicken) and bacon.... mm bacon twisties

the brownlow medalist was to make an appreance at the orchard show

a writer to the editor was already complaining about a tied final replay, wanting sudden death...

milk is a fine, thirst quenching drink!

the richmond social club is offering a pleasant sunday morning function...

anyhow ill let you find the gold:

I see they used Ross Faulkner balls in the 61 gf, still seemed a war between t w sherrin and Ross Faulkner for vfl ball supplier.

Also the 200 club was footballs most prestigious club, the small group all shared tie pins

'now in his second year as coach Coleman said the style of play had altered since he began to play, chiefly in the the ball was kept moving faster. The near throws and play on game were contributing factors plus the direction to the umpires to keep the game flowing at all costs.

Perhaps the game is better Said John, people don't come to see ball up all through the game, they want to see good marking and kicking even if the standard suffers because of too much haste.

Nothing changes!

What a great read. here's a few things I noticed..

It's the official ORGAN of the VFL, whatever that means..

There were no umpires in the 1962 reserves gf...:)

Richmond ,North and Sydney had male members only pleasant Sunday mornings...sexist or batting for the other team?

Thanks for sharing Howard...enjoyed reading some of that..

Great effort Howard - It's interesting that people are under the misapprehension, that footy wasn't covered widely in the media since the beginning of TV in the 60's - There were still a plethora of preview and review shows on TV - The biggest difference is the TV coverage ( live ) of all games.
