I was at that game as a fresh faced 17 yo 
, I was standing on the grandstand side half forward flank and was virtually directly in line with Mead as he took his kick.
I remember the South defenders complaining later that they couldn't jump at the ball as it crossed the goal line due to spectators coming over the fence and blocking their space.
Geoff Motley who always wore 17 was captain back then, and I think it was the late Dennis Errey wearing the number 1 guernsey.
Dennis took Jack Cahill's number 14 when that player became captain after Motley retired.
