Is it just me or is this the most meh, obscure and least talked about GF in the AFL era?

- Waverley
- First time a non-Vic side made it (us), one team parade the day before
- Very overcast, first time flood lights had to be used for the GF, yet they still did day time fireworks which looked crap
- Angy Anderson in the batmobile and crap 80s style enterainment
- We got flogged in our first GF
- A Hawthorn flag that just seems so out of place to have been won in the 90s, almost feel like they just pinched it
- Paul Dear as Norm Smith... ummm, okay
- Coach Alan Joyce having the most boring expression on his face after the final siren, considering he won a GF

There was a 1991

But yeah it probably is the least talked about final. The Eagles flags, baby bombers, carlton in 95, kangas, adelaide, etc all have something to talk about.

I was 7 when it happened I just have vague memories of sitting outside in my sandpit and hearing my dad screaming at the television. I would love to watch it tbh

Wow i just found a clip on youtube and the eagles kicked the first 4 goals of the game???? how the fk did they lose? Who was favourites before the game?

Is this the only time in history a team has kicked the first 4 goals in the gf and lost?

So many questions...

It was the end of an era of Hawks dominance, the first non all Vic final, Paul Dear monstered that game, Ayres making Wilson crap his pants, Pritchard giving Matera a footy lesson. I enjoyed it. :thumbsu:

Bound for glory.

Bloody Sumich diving for 50's, or were they 15m, lol, can't remember.

I was there. Eagles were red hot favorites, only lost 3 games in H&A that year.

Though the hawks won 10 out of 11 in the lead up to the GF.

Was a clear case of a veteran unit knowing exactly how to win the flag.

Out of place. Pinched it. LOL - okay then.

83 84 85 86 87 88 89 (90) 91 - 8 GFs in 9 years and we seemed out of place. Haha. We didn't starting really stinking it up until the mid-late 1990s mate.

Joycey was "just happy to get the 4 points"

How dare anyone cast dispersions on the king of all AFL GF entertainment. Angry Anderson, the bat mobile, a mystified Fighting Harada wondering what the hell he got himself into, Lisa Ondieki's husband pissing himself laughing at the shambles, it had everything :thumbsu:

Yeah, it's not really talked about too much, in fact Angry Anderson seems to be the only talking point.

Strangely enough, though, the West Coast team that made the Granny that year had an outstanding home and away record, they won 19 games that year didn't they? In the Grand Final the Hawks were only just up at 3/4 time only to blow the eagles out of the water. It was a better Grand Final than given credit for. It was certainly an interesting set up anyway, you had one of the powerhouses of the VFL competition up against the upcoming powerhouse of the AFL and the old stagers won out on the day.

But yeah, when compared to the two grand finals surrounding it there seems to be very little hype. The year before you had the first AFL flag and the first Collingwood flag in 32 years, the year before that there was one of the most famous Grand Finals, the one between Cats and Hawks. The 1991 flag is then followed by the first West Coast flag, the first ever by an interstate team. Then after that we have the famous baby bombers flag in a grand final between two famous Melbourne clubs.

Has it got lost amongst the other great/ memorable GF's of the time? Absolutely, and rightly so. I was at that GF (like every GF from 1982-2000, except 1990 - bloody drawn semi) and to be honest, I don't remember a lot about the game. Even 1988 had a streaker to remember it by (and of course until 2007 the largest GF win). Was the Hawks premiership out of place? Don't know where that came from considering all the GF's they played in. They were a powerhouse back then. And one of the reasons don't like them is that they got sick of seeing Hawthorn win year after year. The only reason this GF gets remembered is the laughter it provided.

I think you'll also find no Hawthorn player made the All Australian team that year.
An amazing fact.

It is the first game I can (very, very vaguely) remember.

Another hazy memory I have of the 1991 season is hating Carlton, did something happen like... The eagles were going for some record winning streak and carlton beat them but it was controversial, like a goal disallowed which should have been paid or something ? Surely some older eagles fans will remmeber

I remember it well, not discussed alot since but I can't put the say the 96' gf in front of it in terms of making a mark on the competition either. If we didn't have that hiccup in 1990 I'm sure it would be talked about alot more.

I actually think Carltons win in 1987 is on a par in terms of low-profile.

For those old enough to remember, it was the one year that Channel 7 lost the rights to Broadcom who on-sold them to the ABC.

It means that whenever Channel 7 show any sort of flashbacks the 1987 Grand Final is never included.

.... which I'm sure you're all gutted about.

i remember that the Hawks were smashed by the eagles twice during the year.

Then won a final in perth by 20 odd points, which remained the only interstate finals win by vic team until th Hawks again in 2001.

I also remember Jarman had a shocking GF, but it didnt matter.

Also on kicking the first 4 goals and losing in the GF i think the Hawks did it in 84. Collingwood did it and drew this year, im sure its happened a few times.

MadMaxx,

I was there as well. It was shit day if you recall.

All yr 3 points spot on.

Weagles had won first 12 games of the season and lost 1st game to Carlton at PP.

But Hawks knew how to win, Dunstall and Dermie were also good that day. It was great game til 3/4 qtr time, but Hawks came home with the gale that day, and smashed 'em in the last qtr.

It was very odd to not have GF @ the 'G; hopefully will never happen again.

I went as 8 year old...remember 'West Coast w***ers' stickers were handed out outside the ground. Also remember kicking the first 4 goals and thinking hell yeah....but we got caned, furthermore, Fitzroy beat us in the last home and away match and I was thinking, "hmmm we're not really in the greatest form here..."
The umpires were also more biased towards Victoria in those days for sure! In the QF Jako toepoked the ball nonchalantly when it was already clearly outside the boundary line and they said it was out on the full
