And in the following year 1998 the same team finished fifth and again went on to become premiers ... even though apparently the Bulldogs last year were said to be the first team of a final 8 to win the flag from outside the top 4. Not sure how that is supposed to work exactly.
Of the current finals system ;)

maybe under the new format they meant where 1 plays 4, 2 play third etc where as back then as you know it was 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, etc.

I like that! Getting all creepy! Geelong lost opportunity?
Nah, we lost to a far better side mate. We beat them around round 4 or so at Subi after a huge 2nd term { 11 goals } and Ablett went off kicking 5. But they beat us at Kardiniya Park by 19 later on, then smashed us in the second semi by 38 { Matera and Sumich killing us } as they did 2 weeks later in the grand final.

Knocked us off 3 out of 4 meetings and comprehensively in the finals by a combined total of 66 points. We even lead in the GF by 4 goals in the first half but lost by 28 in the end.

WCE were far, far too good. Unreal that side.

Darren Jarman 5 goals in the last qtr 97 and 5 second half goals in the 98 GF. How was that from the big show.

**** crows came back in both too. Very good side.

It was a slightly different system in week 1 so different ranked teams might get an easier or harder opponent but they could get the week off or the second chance ... but after week 1 it was the system same as now. Swings and roundabouts really.

The Crows had a dream injury run too - only AA Ricciuto, Coleman medallist Modra and Vardy out, with Jameson pinging his quad 5 minutes in.

We did it the easy way.
Every side has injuries - StKilda's major problem is that it was to players who all played in the same position.

I still cannot fathom to this day why people mention the Colbert non mark from the Crows vs Geelong final in 1997 but fail to mention the Modra non mark in the same game, or fail to mention the Burns goal that came off Bickley's boot in the same game.
In a game decided by more than a goal, people make more of that mark than it was really worth (even though we did have momentum). Who knows, he may have just sliced another point. The silly finals system that made us play at Footy Park was a bigger factor that year.

Quite simple - it fits their agenda.

Both valid points though.

Not silly at all. Geelong lost to an easier opponent the previous week and therefore had to play away against a side that won against a harder opponent. You don't really think a side finishing 2nd that lost to 7th should have got the double chance and a home game against a side that finished 4th and beat 5th do you?

You finished 2nd and lost to 7th.
Adelaide finished 4th and beat 5th.
Adelaide was the 3rd highest winner from the first week, earning a home final in the 2nd week (the highest 2 going through to the prelims).

Oh, I know the rules that were in play.

However, I think the current system - under which 2nd vs 5th in a semifinal would be played in the 2nd team's home state - is generally fairer. We were just unlucky in our first-week matchup, where Carey went absolutely rampant and kicked seven goals of eleven.

Tim McGrath was generally a good match on Carey, but there were two finals games where he went absolutely Rambo on Geelong and this was one.

No Jarman in that prelim and we lose. No Rehn and we don't get near the flag. Hodge/Dew 2008, Chapman 2009, Goddard 2010, Hawkins 2011, Hannebery 2012, Boyd 2016. Yeah it's a team sport, but it only takes one individual to play out of their skin to change history. I think the Crouches will do the dirty work, but if its a close game, we need a Lynch, Douglas or Betts type with x factor to pull a huge game. Pyke could send a wildcard forward, he's been playing over half the team in different positions.

1997 Preliminary Final v WB - best prelim ever
Respectfully disagree - I'm more of a 2016 man myself ;)

Hardly ever saw Scott Wynd beaten in 10 years but Rehn smashed him in that PF. He was a brilliant ruckman - 3 years out with a knee reco and they finish 12th or worse, 2 years playing and they go back to back.

Um what? You guys lost to Melbourne by 8 goals at the G in round 1 of the finals and survived.

How can 2nd vs 5th happen in a semi final under today's system?

That was 98
