I was hoping for the dogs and Carlton to lose today and Morton slipping through to us, but now i will settle for a Masten/Ebert/Palmer or even a Henderson if the club is confident enough in him. I hope we can get another top 7 odd pick.

I still think there's a chance Morton could slip to us, not that I'd want him.

Morton is a pure outside midfielder and it's safe to say that we have enough of them. An Ebert, Masten or Cotchin would fit our needs far better as they have the ability to win their own ball.

I could see Morton slipping as low as the 7th pick.

Believe it or not being outside isnt as bad as people make out. He has a stack of potential and could be developed anywhere. Would have been an awesome get for us, even though a Masten wouldnt hurt.

Well if we can't get one of Masten, Ebert or Cotchin, we should just pick up Rance. I don't think we should pick up Palmer or Morton, i can't see Palmer being a standout play like the rest of them, i think he'll become a HFF at AFL level who loves a goal with stints in the middle, very similar to Sherman. As for Morton, we have enough outside mids as it is and he's not what we need.

There are lots of good outside footballers and Morton will surely add to the list.

However, it would go against what we need. Essendon have loads of outside footballers yet only really Jobe Watson who can conistently win his own footy. What is required is an inside midfielder.

Its would present an interesting situation if we had the selection of Rance or Henderson. Personally i would prefer Henderson, i think he could develop either end and a i know a few recruiters think the same. Has had a limited season but has performed pretty well when on the field.

On Palmer i would disagree. He runs too hard to just be a flanker, and has the engine to be a good midfielder who runs forward for a few goals.

I have taped a fair few of our matches this season and going over them the other day i would say while another insider is needed, we need the midfielders to start manning up and half the problem would be solved. If you have bomberTV watch a few matches and focus on the centre square and you will see what i am talking about.
Hislop could be a ball winner, i really hope Hocking an him come on and get some big minutes next season in the middle.

What i really like about Morton is his versalitly. Players like him are not there every year, while there are normally a few good inside mids every season. If he was to be available, we would be stupid to pass.

Guess you havnt been watching any of the WAFL recently where Palmer has been getting 20 possessions week in and week out in the midfield. They have had the GPS on him twice and he went further than 18km both times . He is a serious midfielder not a flanker.
Last 5 weeks have seen him get
10k,13hd 0.0
12k,16hb 0.0
13k,7hb 0.2
13k,10hb 3.2
15k,9hb 5.2

Iv'e only seen a few of his games plus some highlights of him. So i guess i havn't seen enough of him to make a correct judgement, the games iv'e seen him play in his mostly played around half forward, did go into the middle, but played more around half forward than in the middle.

I'm less than convinced that Morton's versatility as a junior will translate into the AFL as his physical attributes won't be quite as outstanding in the AFL. I see him translating into a better version of Ryan Lonie in that he'll be great when he's fed the ball and will play some great games, but when it's really there to be won, he won't go that extra step.

On the other hand, guys like Cotchin and Ebert can destroy teams when being fed and really have a dip in a contest. They shape as more all-round midfielders and that appeals to be much more.

Draft pick theories down to Essendon's pick...

1. Carlton (PP) - Matthew Kruezer
2. Richmond - Alex Rance
3. Carlton - Trent Cotchin
4. Melbourne - Chris Masten
5. W Bulldogs - Rhys Palmer
6. ESSENDON - Cale Morton OR Brad Ebert

Thoughts....??

Re: Draft pick theories down to Essendon's pick...

Morton is a perfect match for the Bulldogs i'd rekon.

you have to look at what is likely to happen above us ,too. if rance is really the best, and maybe the only, defender worth taking, he may not even last to our pick. carlton, richmond, melbourne, doggies all need key defenders. it's not inconceivable that carlton take kreuzer and rance, but if they don't i think melbourne will snaffle him because their key defenders are rubbish. but it's not all bad news for us, because what this would mean is that only three midfielders will be gone by our pick, so we should have a choice from two or three top prospects. a quick ball winner would be ideal.

that's a real possibility. They have been taking mids with their first picks for a few years. Gibbs, Murphy, Russell, Walker and you also need to consider that Rance will not be around when they have their next pick. Go on take him Carlton... I dare you!

Morton is nothing like Ryan Lonie, Nothing like him at all. If there was a player who i would compare him to it would be a better andrjs Everitt who certainly looks a gun. The only similiar trait to Lonie is the long kicking.

Re: Draft pick theories down to Essendon's pick...

The Tigers will take Judd, I mean Cotchin at 2. He is a special player. Rance wont go top 5. I think long term he will be good.

Although he didnt have a great U18 championship...??

Cotchin will go to the tiges and Morton will probably be a top 3-4 pick

Re: Draft pick theories down to Essendon's pick...

I can't imagine Rance going that high. Kruezer is surely locked in for no1 considering he's the best available and is what Carlton need. Richmond will take best available in Cotchin. Carlton will take a classy all round mid to add to their on ball brigade as they probably have enough faith in their developing backman. I think Melbourne will take a KPP or someone like Morton. The doggies will pick the best KP forward in Henderson which is what they really need since Johnson is getting on and they can't rely on him to kick the goals week in week out. Which will leave us with Masten :D, who is the best available at out pick aswell as being exactly what we need.

1. Carlton (PP) - Matthew Kruezer
2. Richmond - Trent Cotchin
3. Carlton - Brad Ebert
4. Melbourne - Cale Morton
5. W Bulldogs - Lachlan Henderson
6. ESSENDON - Chris Masten

That's how i think/want things to go.

We will get i of Cotchin, Ebert, Masten, Palmer, Morton. The first 3 would be better

Well i can tell you he has been playing midfield since the champs (it helps to have relatives in WA )and played midfield during the champs.
He is a midfielder who kicks goal not a half forward.

The Bulldogs will definately take Henderson as they lack tall forwards as Darcy and Grant are retiring/getting old.

I think he'll become more like Lonie than you think but he'll be a much better version as he'll get a lot more of the footy, mainly because it seems that he reads the play a lot better and is better over head.

He is the Lonie prototype though, that being the midfielder/back flanker that is fed the ball to break the lines and deliver into the forward line.

your player summaries are outstandingly detailed, ant, so i'll ask this question to you: Would you say Rance's prospects as a defender, and hendersons as a forward, are as good as some of the midfielders? in other words, would a club (like melbourne and footscray) looking for some structured players opt for these guys early or are they not good enough to risk passing over the mids for? because i reckon this equation will decide the makeup of the top 7 or 8 picks, and thus who is available to essendon at #6.
