I'd take Gumbleton over Leuenberger anyday. He's really shown some good signs this year.

Where has he shown good signs? Has he shown better signs than Leuenberger?
I wouldnt have thought so.
Gumby will be a good player but I think Leuenberger will be a great player.

I wouldn't think either of them have shown signs that re stronomically better than the other.

Given it's their first seasons and Gumby's fitness is extremely low at the moment, it's too early to call which will be better.

I think there's a good chance that both will go on to great things, but given how close they are in potential it's too close to call which will go on to be better.

However, Gumbleton was always my preferred option. This because he has flawless kicking skills, good hands and a terrific football brain. It's hard to see him failing. With Leuenberger, whilst he's got terrific skills and fitness, he's a ruckman and, due to all sorts of extraneous variables, ruckmen are more prone to failure in my opinion.

Not disagreeing with you here or anything, just wondering what IYO these extraneous variables are?

Pretty sure statistically ruckman are more hit/miss with earlier picks in comparison to other positions, and just wondering why this is.

It's hard to pinpoint but I'll put it down to 3 main areas.

1) Rule Changes: The ruck is the position that has been affected the stongest by rule chnages of any position. The extra circle has led to smaller ruckmen struggling and the tight rules on rucking around the ground has worked against those who like to wrestle. The skills for it seem to change all the time.

2) The burden: The need for independent ability in the ruck is greater than any other position. You can't be fed in the ruck, you have to work your ass off for everything. Unfortunately, those skills don't come naturally to anyone. The pressure is huge and, when guys are 18, it's hrad to tell if they're up to it.

3) Injury: It's hard to carry injuries in the ruck because of the huge amount of physical play. There's not much in the way of uncontested play. Injuries can't really be tolerated and, as such, ruckmen can't play as many games.

I have it on good authority that the Bombers are going to take Ben Mcevoy with their first pick.
Apparently your recruiters rate him higher than Kreuzer.
BTW I know nothing about any of the kids in the draft, so i'm not suggesting this is good or bad.

Anyhow, we'll all know in time.
Good size and athletic. Saw him play senior football this year in a word SOFT:(

Doesn't mean we're not going to see quality.

The same applies to Luenberger, what's your point?

Gumbleton, without a pre-season and a few injuries during the year has shown just as much promise as Luenberger has at Brisbane in widely acknowledged as the most difficult position.

My point is that whilst we won't see the extent of Gumbleton's potential for a few years, we're still going to see some serious quality.

I think we are in a bit of a difficult situation really. Ebert would be the best choice IMO, but we really need a tall defender to take over when Fletch and Mal leave. We need to get some development into whoever we pick for this role, so we should be looking as that as our first option IMO. therefore, I think Rance should be our first pick.
Kepler, Lee and Ryder

Kepler, Lee and Ryder

Kepler isn't a defender he is a forward. It remains to see if Lee is a defender and whether he can cut it as a defender, as he played forward as a junoir and his best VFL games have been forward. Also, we dont want to limit RYder as a defender- he may still be a rcukman/ forward or Goodes-type on baller.

Which games were these?

I certainly can't remember any VFL games where he's been good up forward and I'd think that's because he's barely been used there.

Aside from that, your point is correct, Lee isn't a pure defender just yet. However, he's not going to make it as a forward as there's already a large queue ahead of him so he's going to have try and become one quick smart.

Is Rance the son of or related to Murray Rance who played with the Eagles in the late 80's or early 90's

We have confirmed pick 5, we will take who ever is left of Kreuzer, Masten, Cotchin, Ebert and Palmer

It will actually be pick 6 after carlton tank their way to another loss today

not possible,

Freo
Essendon
Bullies
Demons
Carlton
Richmond

we have already played and so gave freo
we cant get pick 6, but if the bullies win 2day, we will get pick 4

^^I think you're battling with the concept that Carlton will get two picks in the top few if they lose today.

carlton will tank their way to a priority pick, their second in 2 years thus it being before the first round this year.

The draft order, assuming north beat the bulldogs

PP:carlton
Richmond
carlton
Melbourne
Bulldogs
Essendon

I don't think so...

Palmer and Masten are something special.

Goddamn Carlton...we'd get either Cotchin, Masten, Ebert or Palmer with pick 6...
Let's hope the Dees out tank them today :thumbsu:

Just remember we pick before you Lach, unless some trades are done.:D

Doubt it very much if Palmer and Masten will both be there for your pick.maybe 1 but doubtful of both being there.

NO ONE CAN OUT TANK carlton, IT'S THE ONLY THING THEY DO WELL.

surely the following will have to be resolved before any predictions of who we are likely to draft can be made:

1) who will be the coach
2) what philosophy will said coach have? a complete cleanout of established players such as mj, jj etc? is there a place for bradley, hille etc or do we target high draft picks? or will some players want out, and if so, what will we get for them? could we adopt the same idea as hawthorn with 5 or 6 picks before pick 25? who knows? it could be anything.
3) where do we rate darcy daniher, and what role do we envisage for him? key defender? if so, does this offset the need to draft rance? and where does sydney rate daniher? will they try to make us pay over the odds?
4) we don't even know where we will finish yet. as i type this, doggies lead north, and we may have pick 4. do we still go with the same player as if we had #6?
5) sheedy almost always went for the key position player. the new coach may only want running types early.

my feeling is that we need a top-notch midfield prospect. recruiters will also keep an eye on the likely strengths of next years draft. based on the two drafts, we may opt to target one type of player this year, and another type next year.

as long as one of them is there I will be happy.
