Fair enough haven't quite paid enough attention to him perhaps. When I have happened to see him he seems to be struggling and not quite what I thought he would be 5 years ago.

He's the number 2 ranked batsman in the world, one of a handful - ABDV is the only other one I can think off the top of my head (Root possibly - Kohli falls short in tests) to average 50 in both formats, and averages exactly 6 international innings per century in tests/odis .

Fair to say, if he hasn't turned into what you thought he would, you had reasonably high expectations.

We do not need Marsh in the team, collapses happen from pressure and feeling the burden of needing to make runs. Debuting at 6 is great for Ferg and our lineup looks strong
I understand the desire to have an allrounder in there however it doesn't match up with our rotation policy.

If we're going to pick our best bowlers every match then it makes sense to have someone who can bowl at No 6 and spread the workload. Precent those guys from getting absolutely cooked.

However we rotate them anyway so we may as well go in with four bowlers.

Playing Burns in India would be catastrophic!

You're probably right, but not like we're stacked with good players of spin. What's Warner's average in India?

Australia needs to ditch our decade long obsession with forcing an all rounder in the side.

Siddle and Lyon can bowl a lot of overs and even Warner can bowl some medium pace to give bowlers a bit of a rest

Yep

Warner, smith and I think Voges are all capable.

Nothing quite like an opposition batsmen throwing their wicket away to a part timer.

crap from a NSW boy, Has NSW actually played any games away from Sydney this year ??? only 1 shield game 8 others
at home on flat decks producing big scores, and plenty of turn for O keekeeeeeeeeeeeeee, boosting there egos
has MAddison ,Patterson and Henriques ,scored any run outside of NSW, ( exclude Canberra) NO

http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/en...=1;template=results;type=batting;view=innings

Burns has scored 3 hundreds and 4 fifty's in his 12 tests, Excellent return
Spare a thought for the Tassie boys , no games at home YET ( a distinct disadvantage for guys pressing for test selection )

Flat track bully and is our VC
Mr Warner"s scores this year(2016) at overseas test venues is certainly nothing to write home about

They may need to find a way to share an extra 4(!) overs per inning because this allrounder s**t simply ain't working!

He's averaging something like 8 overs an innings. But he swings between bugger all and a full load depending on the state of the other bowlers, the state of the opposition batting innings and Smith's call..

I'm not saying that he should be in the team, it's more that I can't see the selectors doing without any all-rounderz.

Mate, most batsmen are "flat track bullies", even legends.

Slater (Home: 52.63, Away: 35.29)
Warner (Home: 60.80, Away: 38.54)
Clarke (Home: 62.05, Away: 39.50)
Walters (Home: 57.83, Away: 39.52)
Lawry (Home: 56.36, Away: 39.61)
Boon (Home: 46.34, Away: 40.01)
Langer (Home: 48.66, Away: 41.37)
Hussey (Home: 61.19, Away: 41.37)
Hayden (Home: 57.89, Away: 42.69)

Biggest issue with the team isn't being flat track bullies, it's scores in the third and fourth innings.

Smith's average in the first innings of a test match is 88.08, his average in the fourth is 33.23 and he's never scored a century. In the past, captains like Waugh used to be able to rely on others in the last innings if they struggled, but Smith doesn't have that team and needs to shoulder more responsibility.

If a match is going into a fourth innings and Australia is batting, there's a fair chance there's a chase on. So can Australia afford having their captain average 33 while chasing? He's also made only one third innings hundred as well, on that road against New Zealand in Perth. So opposition teams know that if you get Smith out cheaply in the first dig, you're not likely to see much in the second.

Another stat is since his hundred against New Zealand in Hobart, Warner hasn't scored a century in the fourth innings of a test match. Most of his hundreds in the third innings of test matches have been when Australia is on top. Time for those to think about how they play better and smarter later in test matches where their batting is important and the other lesser players look upon them to step up, they are afterall captain and vice captain.

No Martyn in that list!

Not just flat track bullies but front-running flat track bullies. We knew that.
