No thanks.

He might be good enough (might is the key word), but can we not have yet another bloke who is retiring within 2 years.
Glad we gave Rogers a chance at 36.

Who else in the current side is retiring in 2 years btw? Voges about it really.

Don't disagree at all, I just think Maddinson is even more of a left field choice. I like Faulkner but he's no chance either. Handscomb the most likely of the four but the problem is the only spot available is an opening spot.

Here is a bit of a left field suggestion, but I'd play Mitch Marsh as a bowler (bat at 8). He's good enough for a front line bowler, and it isn't his 'batting' keeping him in the side.

Handscomb at 6, Nevill at 7, Marsh 8, Starc 9, Hazelwood 10, Lyon 11.

Open with Bancroft.

Voges.

Klinger isn't as good as Rogers. Average of a tick under 41...whilst it is handy, Rogers had a FC average of 50 basically. There is a difference.

Back end of Maxy's career has been very good, a late blossomer. Rogers also had better alternatives to go up against.

I think Klinger would do a good job for a few years. If not, then Banners ahead of Burns if Marsh isn't fit.

Waste of time having patch up job players. Lets try and find a guy who can average 40-50+ at test level- whether that be Patterson, Handscomb (my preference), Head, etc.

Bancroft is in my side, suits our test side and when we go to India, he plays spin well (made 200+ for Aus A over there)

Klinger would average that for that period, that's kinda my point. Voges has, I have no doubt Klinger would too. Anyway.

Yes to Banners.

Voges has a decent average but take out the Windies tests (lets cut to the chase every half decent bat can score runs against them...), and all of a sudden his average isn't so pretty. Don't like having an inferior version of Voges just because he has had a few decent years late in his career. Time to move on, blood some youth (and we have options). Personally I'd be playing Handscomb as like Bancroft he plays spin well. Handscomb is the best player of spin that we have, period.

I think that description does Klinger a disservice, he's a quality bat these days in his own right. I can understand the longing for a player who will fill the spot for longer, and Pete H does seem a likely type. I'm less sold on the alternatives at this stage. I hope Handscomb gets blooded then taken to India.

Each to their own. If it was 2014-15, I'd actually be on board and I wanted Klinger in the last Ashes squad (has form over there). However that time has passed, we need to move on and we need some long term options. Even with Voges our side still has the same problem- Warner and Smith are our only good bats and it is an issue. We need to get some players in there and keep trying until we get the right mix. Patching up with older players won't help this.

Handscomb, Head, Patterson are 3 likely types. Then you have the QLD bats (too young at this stage), Travis Dean (Vic).

If we want sort of a mid range player between the two ages, I'd be considering Ferguson, but I'm not sure on him.

Voges averages 48 against opponents that aren't the Windies. He's only played 18 tests so if you remove 5 of them it's going to have an effect.

How many batsmen in the test team average 48?

Fair point who then. Don't say Siddle.

As to the opener. If no Maddison/Davis or a specialist they either go back to Burns (no imo) or simply go back to Cowan.
Liam Davis? The bloke who hasn't played a first class match since March 2013.

Is there another Davis I've just completely forgetting? I'm so confused.

Patto's injured and unsure why Head would be ahead of Handscomb

Always playing for tomorrow, never for today. Klinger as a short term option is hardly the worst suggestion. Better than Maddinson, that's for sure.

I don't want Maddinson near the side. I can't stand the bloke most of the time. He has to show consistency for once.

Handscomb thanks.

Playing for 'today' sure worked in the last Ashes series that is for sure...

It is time to move on, we need some fresh blood within reason, and these batsmen are ready. No point picking a bloke barely averaging 40 at FC level who is 30+

So pick a young guy who can't average 40 at FC level?

Pick a guy who has potential, has shown signs and is by far and away our best player of spin. We don't need two old blokes in our side. Voges gives enough experience we don't need another.

Handscomb, Patterson, Head are the top of my list. I'd also consider a few others, but no-one over 28, there is no point.

Has been dominant his past 2 years. You're judging him off years as a teenager and where his team decided to open with him.

Was unaware Patto was injured bring in Valente or AJ Tye

Just no.

Tye is an awful 4 day cricketer he relies on variations and he even got carted in t20 internationals. Valente isn't ready.
