Opinion 1st Week of Trade Week a Dud

Yes I know we have had the Huge Tim Kelly Trade but outside of that there be Stuff all Trades and News on Trades.

We at least normally get a lot of updates of Trades but this week we had next to no Updates.

Even Trade Radio and other Media seem to make things up just for Something to talk about.

Clubs are not letting much out in there Discussions

And this is why the industry as a whole needs to grow the * up.

10 days of nothingness has been kicked off with opinions being paraded around as facts with "journalists" going from job to job, podcast to podcast. Like seriously, how many times can Riley Beveridge, Mitch Cleary get there heads on radio/TV/Internet?

If the industry was mature enough we could accept players moving clubs and signing deals mid year. Would actually mean we can have a break from football for a few days over November/December. Unlikely to happen with AFL house's desperation to make it the only talking point in town

Yeah, perhaps it is because clubs are interested in their own list management and targeting of players to improve performance rather than the theatre of trade period for the masses.

Professional organisations usually don't give away secrets. It's good that club staffers have finally figured out to keep their mouth shut around sensitive issues. The journos talking nothing but crap all season long are the problem. But sadly trade week is still some footy fans pinnacle.

For the first time, I've made the decision to simply ignore all forms of football media during trade week because 80% of it all is baseless conjecture. Once trade week ceases and all moves are completed, all the time you spent reading rumours with little substance and fascinating over them will have been a complete waste of time. What happens happens, the rest is irrelevant.

It's not that it is (or should be) theatre, rather than it is unnecessarily long, and that the List Managers are procrastinating until deadline.

4-5 days is ample time.

Speaking from experience on 4 days being enough? Have you managed a few AFL lists before?

Player movement periods should be kept the same or potentially expanded. The only argument for less is that fans are impatient, but fan interest should not have any bearing on how the league or clubs choose to operate it's movement. The AFLPA endorse bigger windows, as it benefits players. The clubs endorse it because it benefits them also.

Can only Blame the AFL and the Media for Fans being Impatient.

The only reason it was expanded in the first place was to keep the AFL on the front page during the off-season. And when it got ludicrously long, they shortened it, but not by enough.

The list managers work to a deadline, whether that's 1 day or 1 month. And they spend all year preparing for this period, it's not like thay actually wait until Monday to start, even though they don't bother to do any trades on the Monday.

They should just shift the initial meeting to the previous Friday, then start Trade Week (as in, actually start) on the Monday morning.
Finish it up on the Thursday night or Friday afternoon.

You've conveniently glossed over the fact both clubs and players prefer a longer trade window. And supported your position with the rock solid argument that people work to deadlines. Good chat.

No, you blame the fans such as myself hanging off trade theoreticals and discussion for it. The media have simply tapped into the public's appetite for it.

Well the AFL and Media could come out and Down play the Trade Period or come out and say not worth Following the Trade Period until the Final Few Days as that when at least 90% of the Trades get done

Got any sources for that? When it was longer they all said it was too long.
Yep, Andrew Dillon in 2018 said all clubs supported current trade and draft arrangements and that they worked closely with clubs in developing the process. Makes you think, if clubs and players wanted 4 days, it would be 4 days. Which it isn't. Therefore they don't. Simple.

Trade week spiced up just after the OP posted given the GWS pick swap, Lions FA signing of Birchall, Ryder now spotted at Carlton, etc.
