Past Daniel Menzel - delisted 2019

He wouldn't be due to start training until Monday as he has more than 5 years service. Only 1 to 5 year service players are required at training under the CBA

Yep I knew that. I was just hoping he'd get back from usa and get stuck into it. Get to know the guys and show a bit of dedication like thurlow.

Can Menzel play in the midfield or is he only built as a forward? Our forward line is looking very healthy between Menzel, Buddy, Reid, Ronke, Papley, Hayward, McCartin & Blakey
Menzel was recruited to help fix our forward line problems, mainly that we have no one to kick to other than Buddy. Menzel needs to stay forward. That is his position.
I’m confused.

Haha Menzel is a specialist forward. He is very clever and knows where to run, how to find the footy and when to create opportunities for team mates. Most of the younger guys on our list are still learning these crafts and rely a little more on being in the right spot at the right time. Dan just does it better than this guys atm.

Just want to wish you guys the best of luck with Dan. He is a much loved player at Geelong and I’m sorry that he was forced to seek “other opportunities”. Even if he only plays 3 massive games for you guys in September, then he’s been a steal. Good luck next year.

Cheers mate. And if your done with that Dangerfield fella we'll take him off your hands too.

I don't really take anything Garry Lyon says seriously any more. He's carved out a media career being a drama queen about everything and blowing little things way out of proportion to build hype. I get the importance of forward pressure but if Menzel's kicking 40 goals a year for us I think it's disingenuous to say he's also giving up 40 goals a year. We have some good young pressure forwards supporting him and a whole midfield and backline to get through as well.

Tim Watson's comments were a little more measured and probably valid. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out. I think he's best 22 but defensive accountability is in the Sydney DNA so Menzel will be challenged to develop the defensive side of his game to earn his spot.

LOL they don't say the same thing about Ben Browne who would have to be the worst defensive forward in the league

he is a key forward. big difference to the opposition player running off menzel.

i said the same thing a couple of weeks ago. it seems perfectly reasonable to me and explains why no-one but us wanted him.

Probably the same reason no one but us wanted Mitch Morton a few years ago. Cheap as chips but if it goes right, he can keep us relevant in terms of a p'ship with his x factor.
If he ends up not playing a game then it is only a 1 year contract. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Any forward line that kicks as few goals as ours is not working well. It could all come down to too much emphasis on Lance. Yes we need to improve in the mids. But that has been taken care of in the draft and by moving Mills and Jones to the mids

I blame our midfield for it though as our forwards did not get the ball enough and would often have to move higher up the ground to help the midfield out. A dominant midfield would allow the forwards to stay closer to the forward line and would also give better service to the forwards as well.

I’d take the extra 3% too.

Reid’s kicking just isn’t as bad as made out anymore. He only really had one poor year (more behinds than goals) and that was in his first full season. That’s when he gets on the park of course...
He still does the worst of shanks though. That point running into an open goal or the set shots where he either kicks OOF from 10-20 metres out or just gets it in for a point are woeful.
