Hawthorn get some good news on injury front with Jarryd Roughead clear

Hawthorn forward Jarryd Roughead has been cleared to play in the club's round 1 clash with Melbourne Demons.

Roughead suffered a jarred knee early in Friday's final practice match, against Brisbane Lions at Southport.

But Hawks general manager of football Mark Evans said yesterday the big forward had pulled up fine and would be right to play the Demons.

Jarryd Roughead (knee) and Garry Moss (ankle) were also in the wars in the loss to the Lions but Evans said both should be fine to play in the round one clash against Melbourne in two weeks.

“Roughy was the one we were all worried about as it happened. He over-extended his knee and went down holding it and the medical staff got him off the ground,” he said.

“They checked him and cleared him to play with about two minutes to go in the half. We decided to wait until half time and when we went in and half time we thought there was no point running the risk of putting him out there in the second half.

The immediate challenge is finding someone to join Brent Renouf in the ruck after injuries to Simon Taylor, Max Bailey and Wayde Skipper. To that end Mitchell admitted Hawthorn would either have to hope that an under-developed teenager could prematurely seize his moment or gamble on getting more benefit from their full-forward Jarryd Roughead in the ruck.

Now, the Hawks, though undermanned all over the ground for today's round-one match against Melbourne at the MCG, are desperately short of big men, having lost Robbie Campbell to an untimely retirement as well as Max Bailey, Simon Taylor and Wayde Skipper to injuries.

Clarkson backed Brent Renouf to do the bulk of the ruckwork with support from Jarryd Roughead, who will be operating up forward without suspended spearhead Lance Franklin.

Season 2010 - Round 1 - Hawthorn v Melbourne
Saturday 27th March, 2:10pm, MCG

The Hawks took on Melbourne in the first game of the 2010 season at the MCG on saturday afternoon. With Buddy out suspended, Roughy was to be the focal tall forward for the Hawks, with help from Morton as well as an abudance of small forwards including Osborne, Brown and debutants Peterson and Hooper. However, the question for Hawks fans was how much time Roughy would also spend assisting Renouf in the ruck due to the Hawks depleted ruck stocks.

Roughy started the game well with strong marking and a nice goal early in the match. The pressure applied by the forwards throughout the game (particularly in the first half) was brilliant with turnovers caused by Roughy and the other forwards resulting in goals. Roughy was given many scoring opportunities to convert during the game, but some wayward kicking saw him finish the match with 3 goals and 5 behinds.

Rough did spend sometime in the ruck during the match, mostly taking centre bounces when sole ruckman Renouf needed a well earned break. Renouf copped a corky just before half time, and due to the Hawks large lead going into the 4th quarter, was rested. This meant Roughy was needed in the ruck more towards the end of the game.

Overall, it was a good start to the year for both Roughy and the Hawks. Good forward pressure, some nice strong marks and team work showed that Roughy is in for a good year, but the Hawks will need him to convert his shots on goal better in the coming rounds, especially against teams like Geelong, Bulldogs and Collingwood.

Season 2010 - Round 2 - Hawthorn v Geelong
Monday 5th April, 2:10pm, MCG
The Hawks were on the big stage in round 2 of the 2010 season playing against their fierce competitors, Geelong. Games between the two sides have been tight over the past few years, and the Geelong defence has often restricted the influence of Hawk tall forwards Roughy and Buddy.
With Buddy back in the team this week after suspension, Roughy had a bit of the spotlight taken off himself. His opponent changed constantly throughout the game, and was a mix of Harry Taylor (who previously has played on Roughy), forward turned defender Tom Lonergan and the competitions best backman in Matthew Scarlett.
Roughy was up and about in the first 3 quarters, kicking 4 goals and 3 goals assists, as well as pinching hitting in the ruck again whilst Renouf had stints on the bench. His scoring conversion was up this week, finishing with 4.1, but he also missed a shot from 10m out as well as spraying a kick from 40 metres which should have registered a score.
Scarlett was moved onto Roughy once he had notched up 4 goals, and the premier defender managed to keep him relatively quiet for the last quarter of the game.

Season 2010 - Round 3 - Hawthorn v Western Bulldogs

After a tough game against the Cats in round 2, there was a lot of talk about how the Hawks would be able to handle the dogs under the roof at Etihad Stadium. The first half was tough and hard, but it wasn't until the 4th that the Dogs eventually ran over the Hawks.
Roughy again assisted Renouf in the ruck throughout the game, but spent the majority of his game time in the forward line opposite dogs defender Dale Morris. Overall, he had an average day, kicking 4 goals for the afternoon but also making 3 clangers and disposal efficiency of 54%. His kicking for goal was again down at times, missing a set shot early, a running goal from 10 metres out and spraying another kick from 45 out of bounds on the full.

Season 2010 - Round 4 - Hawthorn v Collingwood
Sunday 17th April, 7:10pm, MCG
A lot of hawks fans were confident about the Hawks chances for the Saturday night clash with the Pies after their recent good record, but it turned out to be a very disappointing night for fans, the Hawks and also Roughy individually.
Collingwood choked the Hawks with their zone, whilst very poor disposal and lack of awareness from the Hawks made it very difficult for the forward line to function. With no Buddy there as support (due to a one-week suspension for a high bump on Aker), Roughy was the focal tall forward option for the Hawks. Whilst supply and opportunity was lacking, it was also wayward kicking and missed opportunities, by Roughy in particular, that helped contribute to the 64 point loss.
Also, as Buddy was missing, Roughy spent the majority of the game forward against defender Simon Prestigiacomo. He spent much less time in the ruck this week compared to the last few rounds, only contesting in the ruck a handful of times throughout the night. Roughy finished the game with 1 goal 2 behinds.
