Pies dispose of Hawthorn

Heath Shaw (26) provided great run from defence and Simon Prestigiacomo limited Hawthorn spearhead Jarryd Roughead to one goal.

Hawthorn succumbs to super pressure from Collingwood

Fortunately for Collingwood the Hawks were no better, with Campbell Brown and Jarryd Roughead also squandering early goal scoring chances.

Potent Magpies thump Hawthorn

COLLINGWOOD has put a tumultuous week behind it to comfortably beat Hawthorn by 64 points at the MCG on Saturday night.

The Magpies ignored the controversy over coach Mick Malthouse's quarter-time spat with St Kilda's Stephen Milne last Friday night to hand the Hawks their third straight loss, 17.21 (123) to 8.11 (59).

Hawks wilt as Pies pile on pressure

SO THIS is football now.

For much of the first half last night Hawthorn shaded, and then later broke even with Collingwood for contested possessions. At the main break Alastair Clarkson's men led the clearances by a comfortable margin, Sam Mitchell and Luke Hodge were the top two possession winners on the ground and the much-maligned one-man ruck division of Brent Renouf was dominating the hitouts by 28-15.

HAWTHORN stars Lance Franklin, Jarryd Roughead and Sam Mitchell have slammed the door on the Gold Coast by signing new deals with the Hawks.

Franklin has signed a new three-year deal and Roughead has committed to the club for another four years.
Skipper Mitchell has extended his contract for two more years.
Franklin and Roughead were both believed to be high on the shopping list of the new Gold Coast club, which can sign one uncontracted player from each club at the end of the year.

Sunday 25th April, 5:10pm, Aurora

Some articles from the Round 5 Match against North Melbourne:

Roos capitalise on height advantage

On the flipside, the loss of Renouf also meant Hawthorn had to take Jarryd Roughead from attack and play him at the centre bounces, while Luke Hodge took a lot of the ruck contests around the ground on top of his midfield duties.

http://www.smh.com.au/afl/north-mel...talise-on-height-advantage-20100425-tllk.html

Roos beat Hawks by 12 points at Aurora Stadium

Key forward Jarryd Roughead was summoned to deputise as the makeshift tap ruckman at the centre bounces.
And Luke Hodge had to compromise his midfield role to be the third man up so often in stoppages around the ground.

Battling Roos refuse to bow to Hawks' bravery

Jarryd Roughead took the centre bounces before going forward and it was left to Hodge, spring-heeled six-footer Carl Peterson and anyone else who could get there, to make a contest at the restarts around the ground.

Hawks fall short in Tassie

The last-minute withdrawal of Hawthorn’s only ruckman in Renouf created confusion on and off the ground in the opening moments but Jarryd Roughead battled bravely and was assisted by a range of teammates at ruck contests around the ground.

Some articles from the Round 6 Match against Essendon:

Bombers too hard for Hawks

Franklin always looked dangerous, but then again Hooker played very well considering the number of times the ball came towards them, and with Jarryd Roughead unable to slip Dustin Fletcher, it was always obvious where the trouble spots on the ground were, and the Bombers were able to cover each other.

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/bombers-too-hard-for-hawks-20100501-u0hu.html

Bombers rebound to leave Hawks in trouble

In the other forward match-up, Fletcher gave Jarryd Roughead little chance to get involved in the contest.

The Bombers' veteran turns 35 next month, but you would barely have known it the way he continues to perform.

Roughead missed a few shots early in the game and then Fletcher turned the screws up on him, running off him on occasions as well. Fletcher had seven rebound 50s and constantly drove the ball into attack.

Franklin fires but Dons too strong

The Bombers were superbly led by captain Jobe Watson (28 possessions), while veteran defender Dustin Fletcher blanketed Jarryd Roughead, who went goalless.

Sorry Hawks' dirty dozen
Mark Stevens From: Sunday Herald Sun May 02, 2010 12:00AM

Surely, now there will be victims at the selection table ahead of a tough assignment against West Coast at Subiaco.
Jarryd Roughead is surely safe - for now. But his form is a major concern.
Roughead's set shot routine is flawed when he does win it, spraying two simple shots early.
His stuttering, stabbing action, a clear sign of the yips, clearly isn't getting the job done. It has become an embarrassment.
What would Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson give to have Franklin and Roughead firing at the same time.
It seems an eternity since the Buddy and Roughy Show was in its prime.

Hawks go soft: Jason Dunstall

Jarryd Roughead appears certain to survive despite his form woes given the Hawks are desperately light on for quality tall players. Flag defender Stephen Gilham, another who has suffered a form drop since 2008, may also hang on.

Dunstall revealed the leadership group went to the coaching staff in the lead-up to the Essendon clash, calling for it to keep the faith with the core group for a tilt at the Bombers.

The message, according to Dunstall, was clear: "Back us in". "Clearly they coulnt'd get the job done and there's no point persisting with players that consistently produces little," Dunstall said.

Unsociable Hawks are now a pushover

Hawthorn generated 58 inside-50s Saturday night, the same number as Essendon, yet was outscored by 6.7. That defies logic, particularly with Franklin booting five goals.

Which brings us back to Roughead. He has kicked 13.13 this year, with just two behinds Saturday night.

I wrote during 2008 the erratic conversion of both Franklin and Roughead might cost the club the flag. In the end, they got so much of the ball, they kicked 188 goals between them ... and 139 behinds.

Buddy copped all the blame at the time, but Roughy deserved similar criticism. He is a poor kick for goal, his approach suggesting even he doesn't see himself any better than a 50-50 chance.

Not such a happy team at Hawthorn

Saturday night’s performance looked apathetic at best and Jarryd Roughead is leading the charge of Hawthorn players who appear almost uninterested.

Roughead for me has been the most disappointing player of 2010.

His set shot routine is atrocious and as a key forward paid to kick goals, I think Hawthorn fans have a right to be worried. His stuttering and awkward run up needs to be quickly fixed!

Hawk boss has club 'on notice'

He said Kennett's ''provocative and challenging'' comments were good for the club. ''We need to have a president like [him] to make sure we do our very best.

''We've got as many as 12-15 players who are out of form. We are going to need to make some changes to get the spirit back into the group.''

He indicated that Jarryd Roughead, who has been out of form, would be retained and that Roughead had been sore after rucking in the Kangaroos game and in retrospect probably shouldn't have played against the Bombers.

Jarryd Roughead goes M.I.A

052972-jarryd-roughead.jpg

IN TIMES like these, Jarryd Roughead may wish he was playing for Richmond.

Tigers forward Jack Riewoldt has sprayed 7.12 from set shots this year, but nobody is bothering to dissect his kicking action.

When you're a premiership player at a club with high expectations such as Hawthorn, you cop the rough end of the pineapple.

The heats turns up with every dodgy miss and Roughead's 10-step, stabbing action will be a focus again at Subiaco on Saturday as the Hawks confront West Coast.

Roughead has kicked 7.9 from set shots this year, but it is the time and place of the misses that have cut deeply.

After a busy week in the media for Roughy, due to a drop in form, some great news today that Roughy has re-signed for 4 years. Congratulations to both Roughy and the Hawks for getting the deal done!!

Hawks re-sign the big three

REPORT: Hawthorn captain Sam Mitchell and forwards Jarryd Roughead and Lance Franklin have extended their contracts for two, four and three years respectively.

Hawthorn's Chief Executive Stuart Fox said the trio's signings sends a strong message to the rest of the playing group and Hawthorn members.

"Re-signing our Club captain and two star forwards delivers a tremendously strong message of player commitment to the Club and our aspirations for success," Fox said.

Hawks secure three stars

wbHAWKSfrankrough-420x0.jpg

Struggling Hawthorn has received some much needed good news, with three of its most valuable players re-signing. The Hawthorn website is reporting that Sam Mitchell, Lance Franklin and Jarryd Roughead have committed to new deals.

Mitchell’s deal is for two years, and key position stars Franklin and Roughead have signed for three and four years respectively. After a week of angst following a disappointing loss to arch-rival Essendon, in which the Hawks did not score in the final term, the Hawks were in need of a boost, with their season tottering at 1-5.

Articles for the Round 7 match against West Coast:

Kennedy kicks Eagles to victory

Jarryd Roughead provided a focal point in attack for Hawthorn in the absence of injured star Lance Franklin yet lacked adequate support, while the home side should have dominated further with a major 61-29 hit-out advantage.

Josh Kennedy boots five as Eagles beat Hawthorn by eight points

Hawks forward Jarryd Roughead booted four final-term goals and six for the match, but it wasn't enough as the Eagles held on for dear life in the final 15 minutes to post a 15.12 (102) to 14.10 (94) victory, their second win of the season.

Eagles land Hawks in the rough

svGLASS-420x0.jpg

WEST Coast breathed again and Hawthorn's pulse was faint and fading fast, after the Eagles finally prevailed in a game that produced two six-goal forwards, but little else of quality.

On a day made for key targets, Josh Kennedy and Jarryd Roughead kicked half-a-dozen majors apiece, the midfield groups cancelled each other out, and both sides played as if they had forgotten how to win.
