Would have to get rid of the cap if the AFL did that. Then clubs like the Doggies would instantly fold because they couldn't afford any players.

Then we would have 4 teams competing for the flag every year.

If all this happened the EPL will have come to Australia.

This is exactly what would happen, the big clubs would be the only ones able to compete. It could never work.

I come from a soccer backround and sometimes the relegation battle is more interesting than who wins the league. There would be a lot more close games as crap clubs are in the different leagues from good clubs and could cut out tanking. The standard in the second tier would obviously not be AFL, but better than current WAFL, VFL, SAFL.

Relegation would never work in the AFL for one specific reason, we have 3 "minor" leagues. These leagues would need to be merged, and teams would need to fold or merge as well. Talent would not be discovered in various states (those who are nto drafted) and therefore AFL would slowly be bread out of extinction.

Also, how would the draft be decided if there are multiple leagues? you cannot gage a team finishing on top of league 2 being better then that of the bottom league one team.

Then also, the team(s) that move up to league 1 would be at a serious disadvantage, and would be relegated instantly, while the team who dropped out would be back in, giving very little change.

It would be a good idea but it is absoluteky impossible. Were could they possibly find 12 more places to put afl teams. Theres no chance a melbourne team will attract any fans.

Ok...so it wont happen , but give the guy some cudo's for thinking outside the square !!!

You would only need to find and fund 4 new clubs.

Extra one in SA..play at Adelaide oval.( 30,000 a game )

Extra one in WA ( not sure )

New one in Tasmania ( 15,000 to 20,000 ? a game ..plus sole state sponsors clamouring to join up )

New one in Canberra.( 10,000 to 15,000 a game ..sponsors like Tassie all over the new team )

Both divisions have 10 teams

Bottom 2 of Div.1 relegated

top 2 from Div. 2 promoted.

Forget the Superbowl like game...waste of space.

To throw in a twist...no matter what Div. you are in all teams play each other once.

Yes this probably will never happen...but dont simply discount it because all you can see are hurdles.

IMHO, the major reason why the AFL would never countenace such a change is the TV people (and the AFL hierarchy in general) not wanting to see either Brisbane or Sydney out of the top division. That would hamper the development of the game as they want it. Also rememnber the two most-watched games in history have both had Sydney in them!!!

One other thing to include in our thoughts on a divisional break-up is the fact that the NRL is working very nicely with a salary cap, but not a draft. Clubs have to fit all their specified number of players into a salary cap, so any new players have to be take someone's place, and that player can get a job elsewhere.

I reckon that this would have to be the system used in any radical change to the competition. But once again it's hard to see this working for the Northern states, because most kids would prefer to stay at home(see Murphy, M).

If you were serious you would have two conferences of eight teams
the AFL and the VFL .
Teams play their conference teams twice (14 games) and the other conference teams once(7 games) for a total of 22 games .
Two GFs with two final fours .
Then a super bowl AFL Vs VFL .

..:)

Now ya talkin'. Come on smart ar5es - what's wrong with this? Effectively 3 grand finals.

Not that bad an Idea but a few problems would be

1. 8 more teams. Dont know where they are going to play. there just isnt enough fans and money out there.

2. The draft. Assuming it stays the same then the bottom div 2 team gets first pick tanking would become even more of an issue with teams losing for picks once they cant get promoted.

3. 8 out of 12 in finals is just to easy u should at least be in the top half to play finals .

4. 4 teams relegated out of 12 is too many also

5. good players are going to bail from div 2 teams. no-one wants to play in the lower league.

6. the div 1 teams will make more money and attract the better playerss meaning u'd see teams come up to div 1 and then go straight back the next yr alot. Also the higher standard in div 1 would make it harder for young players to develop in div 2 then step up to the better level.

In the premier league the threat of relegation never ends. you can fall all the way out of the leagues all together down to the conference leagues and then back to regional leagues but with just 2 leagues and no where else to go not much would change other than a bit of excitement over div 1 relegation .

This could be exciting i think. Especially if we seeded teams at the start, and then they were positioned the next year by their ladder position. We could then have the top teams from the two leagues, play each other in the Grand Final.

With the draw currently unfair imo, couldn't we introduce 2 leagues, and create 8 new teams. Features of the new system:

- 12 teams per league. 2 tiers, Premiership and second tier ala soccer.
- Everybody plays everyone within their league twice, still playing 22 games a season.
- Still have top 8 for both leagues, doubling the number of finals games.
- 4 teams relegated from premiership league, the top 8 of the second tier plays for the 4 spots to get into the premiership league, with substantial financial benefits for finishing positions in the second tier.
- Keep Brownlow, Coleman from Premiership only, new medals for second tier, which would not be as prestigeous.
- Second tier would encourage the development and protection of youngsters.

Disadvantages:

- Derbies and rival clubs may not play other.
- The new clubs may struggle to attract a supporter base.
- There may be some teams which get stuck in the bottom and become bottom feeder clubs to clubs which may always be in the top tier.

Thats all I can think of atm, please discuss, and/or add suggestions or ideas.
 8!

Good point...all I am really doing is saying this should not be laughed at because its hard, like alot were doing on this thread.

I think it is worth some discussion.

With the fixture we could all play each other once, then to finish off the season you play the other teams that finished 2 above and 2 below the previous year ??????

Who knows ?

I know if Adelaide had a third side ( created or re-located eg. the Kangaroos ) and they got to play their home games at Adelaide oval on Friday nights they would get a very good crowd every game !.

Tassie would support one as would the ACT and Perth should as well.

All I am saying is that one day this type of thing will happen and we shouldn't just discount it.

Also I am sure the tv rights would look after themselves.

I think the fact that 4 teams change division every year will ensure club loyalty because it's easier to get into the top league. I think there would be excitement over promotion as well, as fans would like to see how their new team will do against the big boys. It would be a pretty spiteful western derby if WCE and FREO hadn't played each other for a couple of years.

I think the tanking can be cut, with more money going onto the lower league, but more glory to the top league. And with 8 out of 12 teams going into finals for the bottom league, you would realistically have a chance of making the finals for quite a large part of the season.

The big problem is obviously the new teams. I don't think it will happen but i like the idea better than the current system of not play each other twice

one there is not a bigger enough growth in the league but in 10 years i could see 1-2 new clubs
one at gold coast and one at either broome tassie darwin or maybe a second in sydney but we would need massive growth to start all this and that way kangas can stay in melbourne just a thought
