2 leagues

With the draw currently unfair imo, couldn't we introduce 2 leagues, and create 8 new teams. Features of the new system:

- 12 teams per league. 2 tiers, Premiership and second tier ala soccer.
- Everybody plays everyone within their league twice, still playing 22 games a season.
- Still have top 8 for both leagues, doubling the number of finals games.
- 4 teams relegated from premiership league, the top 8 of the second tier plays for the 4 spots to get into the premiership league, with substantial financial benefits for finishing positions in the second tier.
- Keep Brownlow, Coleman from Premiership only, new medals for second tier, which would not be as prestigeous.
- Second tier would encourage the development and protection of youngsters.

Disadvantages:

- Derbies and rival clubs may not play other.
- The new clubs may struggle to attract a supporter base.
- There may be some teams which get stuck in the bottom and become bottom feeder clubs to clubs which may always be in the top tier.

Thats all I can think of atm, please discuss, and/or add suggestions or ideas.

I come from a soccer backround and sometimes the relegation battle is more interesting than who wins the league. There would be a lot more close games as crap clubs are in the different leagues from good clubs and could cut out tanking. The standard in the second tier would obviously not be AFL, but better than current WAFL, VFL, SAFL.

ridiculas... For a start the AFL community is too small, FAR SMALLER than premier league. WHat do we do about drafts? Does every1 go in the same draft or would you want to change that aswell? Same as premier league, where a certain club could chuck out asmuch money as they wanted and get the All Australian team to play for them?
I think that the premier league would change to our format if they could but since there is so many established clubs they can't pick a certain few to play in the league forever and now they cannot have a draft fairly because clubs under the premier league would be way unfairly advantaged or extremely advantaged depending on how they organize the draft.

For all the above reasons this will never happen. Ever.

We missed the regulation boat during the 70's, but seriously can we imagine an AFL league with say no Freo(either of em), Port, Norwood or Glenelg, Collingwood, Carlton or Essendon. Just imagine a Collingwood Vs Carlton VFL game at Waverly in front of 90,000 and an AFL Fitzroy Vs Sturt game at the MCG in front or 20,000 on the same weekend. The VFL would always be a more powerful more cashed up league than the NFL/AFL(whatever it would have been called).

Oh dear.

It's not the creation of new teams that's the problem (IMO that could be easily done - you could comfortably allocate 8 new licences to willing parties), it's that you'd have to scrap the draft and salary caps. That's why a promotion/relegation system won't happen.

In the markets where they're located. We're talking about 2nd division teams here, not current time AFL teams. Places like Canberra, Tassie, Hobart, Cairns and the Riverina would be prime candidates for such a team, as well as existing ambitious clubs like Southport or Norwood.
Finding 8 teams would not be a problem.

Would have to get rid of the cap if the AFL did that. Then clubs like the Doggies would instantly fold because they couldn't afford any players.

Then we would have 4 teams competing for the flag every year.

If all this happened the EPL will have come to Australia.

the AFL and the VFL .
Teams play their conference teams twice (14 games) and the other conference teams once(7 games) for a total of 22 games .
Two GFs with two final fours .
Then a super bowl AFL Vs VFL .

A Victorian team is guaranteed a VFL Premiership Cup every year .
That should keep them happy .

Unfortunately the Superbowl wouldn't carry much interest
as all know the AFL conference would consistantly crush the VFL conference.
