He's the only tall forward we have that can be relied upon to kick a few goals. We need him up forward more than we do down back. Besides, our backline hasn't exactly been destroyed by big forwards this year has it?

It's fair to say Drew's had a lean year by his standards. The last month he has sorta looked like the player we know but largely this season is one to forget. Fortunately our season hasn't finish yet and Drew's abysmal season can be deemed as something better if goes berserk during our finals series. He is capable of going BANG!

Finals footy produces some of most intense yet simplest form of footy. Structure, hitting targets sometimes are forgotten about given the pressure players are under during a finals game. I think it'll inevitably happen to us, we'll kick the ball inside 50 without lowering our eyes. If this is the case, then the coaching stuff should give Drew all the space he wants to cause as much havoc as possible.

One on one he is hard to beat. Remember the game against the Tigers on the MCG a couple years ago. Not much was going well for us that day, Bon decided to give Drew a lot of space in the forward line in the last quarter……he ends up kicking 5 goals.

Give him space, don't let Hooker or Hurley to come in with a spoil or intercept mark. He kicks multiple goals, we win majority of the time. Lets make it easy for Drew because in finals footy he is our most important player.

Abysmal probably bit too strong, not the right word to use. But if we wanna go deep…he'll have to kick more than 2 goals a game.
Agreed , I've got a good feeling about Drew this week his last 4 weeks have been pretty good and last week he was in cruise control

Petrie has actually scored against good teams this year but he is a senior player and must stand up in the absence of Harvey

good thread.

His biggest weakness this year, something he was quite good at in previous years, was mobility. As age has taken him, he is more content to stand and wrestle. He is very strong, but when he is moving and leading he is far better. Whilst complete isolation would be good, it is very limiting on a player having as you said, correctly i might add, an abysmal season.

Perhaps if things arent working for us with the forward set up, a structure id like to see us implement is sub brown. Let lindsay and kayne turner play on either forward flanks. Black at true centre half forward and petrie out of the goal square. This also gives us other avenues to goal, if drew is getting beaten.

Has been mostly poor in big games during his career, so no better time than an Elim final to stand up against a quality defender and deliver as a leader.

No more terrible set shot misses that sap all our momentum, brain freezes at ends of games like against the Lions passing off rather than take responsibility, either.

If he has a very bad game I think we might struggle, so for mine is a key player for our chances. 5 goal game would really set us up.

100% spot on. Needs to stand up in a big final. Hasn't done so for us before.

Is in moderately good big game form in the second half of this year. Stood up in both the Hawks and Crows games and the Richmond game when we had our backs against the walls.
Personally I see Petrie as just one facet of the forwardline on the weekend. He's got a big task ahead of him to try and beat his man in Hooker who towelled him up last time. We'll make it too easy for the scum if we direct too much footy towards him. Black, Brown, LT, Turner and mids like Ziebell, Cunners and Wells etc are all capable of kicking a few and I think that a coordinated effort of finding the right options and making lots of forward pressure will be the key.
Todd Goldstein is the man I see as being the key to our success. If we're winning clearances are generating more clean inside 50s than Essendon then it'll be very hard for them to outscore us.
