If you are taking talls at this spot in the draft the really raw athletic types are the way to go.

Said in the draft thread he might end up a key back prospect. All those athletic ruckman sized key forwards getting around these days. This guy would have the height and speed to go with them.

Drafting another developing ruck is strange… don’t see why we’ve gone this way either from the highlights… strange considering Dodson is light years ahead (despite missing a year) and I was against the Dodson camp.

Good luck to the kid, is up against it being behind Conway and Edwards all the same age. Odds are against it

James Craig was the U18 All Australian ruckman in 2009. Should Melbourne have drafted him ahead of Max Gawn too?

Stanley has 1 year left, Conway is a couple years away as rucks come on when they are at least 25. Conway is highly rated and probably our next decade ruck.

Then we drafted Edwards. Also a developing ruck. Being the same age as Conway, if Edwards makes it he can’t play with Conway as you can only play 1 (or vice versa).

Then we draft a third developing ruck who again, if he does make it, will be ready the same time Conway and Edwards are ready.

1 out of 3 can play. 2 redundant. I get having back ups but a third who is the same age is list mismanagement… unless we think Conway or Edwards won’t make it… otherwise it can only logically be a strange selection for the above reasons.

Conway played 9 games this year (4 VFL, 5 AFL), Edwards played 3 games. It's not "unless we think they won't make it," it's contingency planning for when/if Stanley/Conway/Edwards get injured/suspended/other. It's not that hard to understand.

Iv got no idea, but i think they will try convert him to a Key Forward

Like the athleticism he displays in those brief highlights. Also has a natural kicking action for someone over 200cm tall.

Conway, De Koning, Stanley in the short term and Edwards, Molier as the long shots

Some years it is, some it isn't. Plenty of U18 AA players don't make it at AFL level. Some of the rucks succeed, some do average, some don't do anything. Given Dodson lasted as late as he did, I doubt many recruiters expect he's going to be reaching tremendous heights. Evidently we believed Moiler presented more scope for growth. In the 50s of a draft, no pick is a certainty, and if a player with such significant exposure as an AA selection has not been picked by that point, it's fair to question the outlook for them.

Unless they don't see him as a ruck.

I kind of discount the ruck work I've seen for Molier on the basis of him being a massive size outmatch in what I saw.

What I do see is a great leap and huge agility on a guy that can kick alright. Seems a pretty good facsimile of the draft description of Neale replacing leap with speed.

Maybe it's a case of drafting raw and trying them out in roles, seeing what sticks.

Hard to know what to make of this pick. Highlights are just of him winning taps against an undersized opponent. Can he take a contested mark? Make good decisions with ball in hand? Is he a ruck or a potential KP player with his mobility? So many questions. So few answers..
