Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

:)
I note Longmire confirmed that a sore shoulder was affecting Reid:

“He just had a sore ankle and a sore shoulder and a couple of little niggles that happen when you play centre-half-forward and you’re 20 years of age,” he said."

by the way i saw your support before it was deleted, cheers mate.. one day we can all get along, as we all love the swans here..:)

Not sure why you'd compare that. Reid gets the best defender and often two. TDL came on and got his goal in junk time. Not defending Reid because he has been woeful and didn't work hard enough tonight, but to use TDL as some sort of benchmark isn't fair.

TDL did get his goal in junk time but he made a immediate impact when he came on the field and at least looked like a AFL player. When was the last time Reid made any positive impact on the field?

Why don't we compare Reid with Folau then

Reid
Disposals - 5
Kicks - 1
Handballs - 4
Goals - 0
Marks - 1
Tackles - 1
Inside 50's - 0
Dreamteam - 16 points

Folau
Disposals - 11
Kicks - 4
Handballs - 7
Goals - 0
Marks - 3
Tackles - 4
Inside 50's - 0
Dreamteam - 58 points

They play a similar position and Folau has a lot less experience than Reid does.

I can excuse Reid's performance today. He was double manned and the delivery into the forward line was abysmal. He's not capable of taking the key defender just yet. White should be crucified if anything.

I've been in the 'He'll come good, he takes 2 defenders' category.

But he was very poor today.
His workrate was down, he was mostly matched up one on one and he is injured or totally devoid of confidence, perhaps both.

IMO, at this stage, we simply cannot carry him any longer.

play him down back and take the pressure of 2 defenders and having to kick goals off him for awhile...

too good to be dropped.. give tdl more time forward, maybe bring in walsh or morton..

benny mac is shot, needs a spell...

I'd be keeping him in the side. He can't continue to be left high and dry up forward with no other talls to kick to though. He has to have some of the load taken off of him.

Walsh, Spangher, Pyke have to be options in the next month as tall forwards. Everitt, as has been said, is just not an acceptable tall forward. He doesn't have the physicality or strength to really take attention away from Reid. I'm not saying he should never play in the side again, but he has to stopped being seen/used as a long, tall target.

ROK has to be played forward. He did OK as the loose man in defence yesterday but he just doesn't have the pace to rebound effectively. Has to be used up forward as another contested marking option.

Reid is not playing well but he isn't helped by having stronger defenders hanging off him with other defenders swarming all over him every time he approaches the ball. Not to mention our woeful use of the ball as we go forward. I long for seeing delivery like Lewis Jetta to Goodes last week in the 2nd quarter. Played on quickly, hit a leading target at full stride with no chance for the defender to intervene.

This week I'd go with a forward line of:

F: TDL Walsh LRT (if he's fit, if not then Pyke)
HF: Jetta Reid ROK

At what point does he have to take responsibility for his own crappy play though? We can say he's double teamed non stop, but you know how to break a double team? Lead into space. I haven't seen him lead into space for weeks.

And when he does get the ball, he stuffs it up. Take yesterday, he had the ball in the centre square, we were breaking forward fast. I think we were 14 points down at the stage. A good pass into the forward 50 and it's game on. He kicks it into the man on the mark, the ball gets shanked and the Tigers rebound. It was pathetic.

Probably because he's had a man dropped about 30m in front of him since the start of the season.

Fantastic mark and exciting looking athlete but terrible footballer. You either have it or don't. These things can't be manufactured.

Game over & on comes TDL. The Tigers didn't pay him the same attention that Reid was payed. We'll see next week how TDL goes. He's been at this point before & didn't provide the forward pressure he needed to. Hopefully he's learnt that in the twos.

Fantastic, in depth insight. Thank you for the post and detailed explanation.

Sorry Shotties, but Reid doesn't have "it". What more do you need to know? If you need further explanation, then I fear you just don't have "it" either when it comes to following footy.

I thank latrell deeply for his concise analysis and look forward tremendously to his further pearls of wisdom.

He needs to learn how to accentuate illegal contact on him. It's just ridiculous what people are getting away with on him because he fights through it and still attempts to mark it whatever they do, like every player should do, but unfortunately they dont. Then you look what Riewoldt gets away with down the other end and im about to go hulk :(

Still had a bad game, needs another focal point up there all the time with him. Would also like him to play some time in the backline to build his confidence up and get some of the ball with easy kicks and switches imo.

I wonder if the Master can expand on how one attains 'it,' and if it's a physical substance or one that resides in a constant metaphysical state forever elusive to Reid.

Couldn't even take a contested 1v1 mark yesterday. In the 3rd & 4th qtrs they weren't even kicking it to him when he was 30m in space with just one player to beat.

He's gotta be back to the 2's until he can find his touch and rhythm again. Same with Everitt.

It's forward or the 2nd's. I don't see any point in unsettling our defence to carry Reid.

Long term he has to be a key forward, so that's where he needs to play and learn.

Well he's not doing a single thing forward, so it must be the 2's for him..

Come on man, he has an all australian backman brother, time to make a change. He wont be double teamed down back, who said his ideal position is forward.. he has proved time after time he cant kick straight, people have whinged that he gets double teamed. make the change, or keep going thru ground hog day til he plays the gold coast or gws again..

His best asset is his marking, well that sounds like another dunkley/bolton chb to me... but hey keep him forward by all means
