Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

Charlie Gardiner confirms Reid will have to wait until the end of the trade period before he is offered a potential new deal.
That should make many happy.
Unfortunately injury prone & had a very disrupted career, hence the feeling of underperforming from some supporters' points of view.
I personally have appreciated what he has brought to our team when he's had a full pre season & injury free run.

Possibly. Start of this year he was playing well. However he ends up injured and Amartey and McClean pass him. Maybe a 1 year deal.
pardon my correction but it is Hayden McLean.

I can't see why we would get rid of Sam. Lack of talent or output hasn't seen him moved on in the past, so I don't see why it would now when he is into his 12th season in 2022 and surely on the verge of reaching his potential.

If Sam departs, what will become of Sam Reid jokes?

I too am greatly concerned by this, but there are lights on the horizon.

With his purchase of the North Shore property, Sam is preparing for life after footy as a cashed up bogan. He has acquired a bicycle, joined a volunteer fire brigade, acquired a set of 2nd hand speedos and employed someone called Bronwyn Bishop to take his bins out.

In a massive breakthrough, Mr Reid has been retained for a weekly spot on a non sporty radio program hosted by Ray Hadley.

Mr Reid will enlighten Sydney listeners with his perceptive views on China, his insights into the nuclear sub deal and his related experience of up-periscope in the bath as well as the evils pf socialism as exemplified by KFC drive throughs. The weekly segment will be a hit with many listeners ringing in and exhorting him to seek pre-selection for what was once someone's safe seat.

IMO Reid would make an excellent tall defender. He's always been the first choice to swing into defence in the dying minutes of a quarter. His kicking for goal is probably his weak spot but he can mark, spoil, read the ball in flight and he's handy when it hits the deck. He's also not afraid to put his body on the line.

People have been saying this for years but it's never happened. If Horse thought it would work he would've done it years ago

Perhaps there was never a compelling need but With an under-sized ageing Ramps, an under-sized Fox, and even McCartin a bit under-sized, plus Brand gone we might have a rethink on using Reid, particularly if Melican is unfit and/or we want to move a play-maker like Fox or Lizard to cover the role of Dawson. Besides, Reid was always more valuable as a forward, but we now have Amartey and McLean plus a young McDonald.

None of our other forwards could do that role as well, and Reid can still pinch hit in the ruck if needed.

Never say never.

Perhaps he could have been dual premiership has he not been injured through 2016. Reid's always worked well with Buddy. We missed him in the 2016 GF, relying on Kennedy to kick 3, our best score. Buddy got the one but so Nick Smith. Tippet was stuffed by then and Xav RIchards had only played a handful of games. They had no impact at all while Bud was well held in playing a lone hand. Reid could have made all the difference. Fast forward to the GF replay, round 2 of 2017, Reid came back in great form kicking 6, while Buddy kicked 4 against the same team.

Well Reid and Buddy have just over 1000 goals combined don’t forget

He would be a terrible defender and would not be able to be accountable for his opponent. It was tried in reserves and he couldn't do it. He would be ok as a loose interceptor like Aliir was, but then everyone else in the backline would have to cover for him. It won't happen.

And he can't get on the park anyway, so it's a moot point.
